MR. CAMPBELL’S SILENCE - Missoula, Mont. Editor Nonpartisan Leader: I have received a letter from Will A. Campbell of the Montana Loyalty league which closed as follows: “Let us hear from you—give us your ideas and join us in our efforts to overcome the forces of destruction. Warn your friends and neighbors of this conspiracy.” A leaflet entitled “The Great Con- spiracy” was inclosed and undertook to show concerted action between the Nonpartisan league, radical labor unions, the Socialist party and the I. W. W. in organizing a Bolshevist ° revolution and establishing a soviet government in the United States. Acting on Mr. Campbell’s sugges- tion that he wanted to hear from me, in” good faith I wrote him, pointing out that there is much misdirected energy in Montana and asked whether the Montana Loyalty league had in-’ vestigated the nature, character and cause of discontent, and if it had what it had done or planned to do toward the removal of wrongs or injustices which produce the undesirable con- ditions. Editor Nonpartisan Leader: I read with great interest an ar- ticle appearing in one of your recent issues regarding the cost of produc- tion of spring wheat and in that con- nection I should like to say that this seems t0 me to be one of the main questions of farming. The secretary of agriculture admits that we are all up in the air when it comes to figur- ing on the cost of production. But how. could a manufacturer sell his product at a profit if he did not know the cost of producing his goods? The fact that mortgages on the farm are on the increase seems to prove that this is the very thing the farmer is doing and it is time that the question should be taken up and thoroughly discussed. 3 G. I am wondering how many soldiers and sailors it will personally benefit when hundreds are seeking employment. It seems to me the money could be used to better advantage.
