i Opinion: of Brokers | ; A . Farm Prosperity The stock brokerage firm of Good- body & Co., New York City, makes some statements of interest to farm- ers in its March market letter. “It is generally assumed,” says the letter, “that with wheat at $2.26 a bushel” ab Chicago, hogs at 19 cents and with the prices of most other farm’ products similarly high, that our farmers are out of debt, riding in- autos and rolling in wealth. “It is true that farm land values in high as they were 10 years ago and that this fact makes many land-own- ing farmers feel rich. It is also true " that there is another side to the ques- tion. This other, and dark side, is dis- played in “The. Food-Crisis and Amer- icanism,” a book just published by the MacMillan. company. The - author, William Stull of Omaha, Neb., is a scientific farmer of wide experience.” The market letter then quotes from the concluding chapter of this book as follows: ; - “The farms of this country are more heavily mortgaged than ever before. many of our best agricultural -states, the majority of men on them are tenants or\hired men, with little or no capital, less education and few _aspirations; many of them foreigners, having no conception of our free insti- tutions. This - situation is full of ‘pathos: and fraught with dangers—not simply because farms are mortgaged, but because those mortgages have, during the fruitful years, increased more rapidly than ever before. * * * Nor is it because some men are ten- ants and others labor for a wage, but because most of these men labor with little hope of ever- acquiring a com- petency or a home of their own. “This accumulation of propertyless people on.our farms is a new situation —a new phase in the economic life of the nation. How long will this class . of people, if they continue in hopeless-|- --Ia toil, turn a deaf ear to the Socialists and .the Bolsheviki, who expatiate on their wrongs and suggest a division of all property and the leveling of all classes.” What Goodbody & Co. think is like- ly to happen in view of the fact that our farmers are so heavily mortgaged that they can not stand.a big reverse, is indicated by the following: * “Just now, we assume that most of our farmers are relatively prosperous. We fear for the future, however, when the prices of farm products decline— as we assume that they will do as soon as Europe’s lands are again well tilled. Will billions of dollars of mortgages be foreclosed? What will be the finan- i igl, economic and political ‘ef~ g fects 7” - For Sale FOR SALE in_ North wnuklou:u %?.00&: stock u"att’lou‘l $10,000, sell on reasonable terms or e for unen- cumbered land.
