K. in every particular, Now have you no- ticed that H. M. Byllesby of Chi- cago is’/the new president of that league? I hand you herein some details showing his connections— he is absolutely owned and con- trolled by the Morgan - General Electric-copper interests, and it is safe to say that all candidates hav- ing the league’s support will be sworn enemies of municipal and gov- ernment ownership, and those not in- dorsed by the league will be Bolshe- viki, disloyal, etc. The Saturday Evening'Post hands you another one this week. They have been so strong for “orderly gov- ernment” and “changes should be brought about in an orderly way through the ballot,” etc., that the following, from their editorial, sounds odd to say the least: “We believe Dakota farmers would have secured every tangible object they aimed at with less friction, less cost and greater benefit to them- selves, the state and the nation, if they had resorted to voluntary co- operation instead of using the co- ercive political machinery of the state.” ; “Coercive” is good. As they don’t believe in the roughness of direct ac- tion nor the smoothness of political action, they must believe in “leaving things as they is”—the old lady’s definition for “conservative.” J. L. PELTON. INSURANCE TRUST ACTIVITIES . Atwood, Kan, Editor Nonpartisan Leader: ‘Find inclosed a letter which is self- explanatory. Evidently the big in- surance interests are becoming alarm- ed, and as I am in great sympathy with the Nonpartisan league, having been a farmer all my life together with my law business, I thought I would send you this, as it would show what some enemies of humanity and progress are up to. All eyes are centered now on the legislature of North Dakota, and here is hoping that she may come out vie- torious. M. A. WILSON. The letter Mr. Wilson sends is an appeal by the insurance federation of Kansas to all insurance men to join and pay dues regularly to fight “cer- tain new political organizations.” On an inclosed leaflet the object of the federation is stated thus: “To fur- nish its members and the general pub- lic reliable information concerning the origin, nature and effect of any and all legislation, the purpose or natural consequence of which is to make the state, directly or indirectly, wholly or in part, an underwriter of insurance hazards of any description. To sup- port and -foster sound insurance of every kind.” , § The insurance fraternity are very much concerned lest the farmers get state hail insurance and the people in general should desire to apply some of the lessons learned from gov- ernment insurance of our soldiers and sailors, or the experience of some states and big corporations in carry- ing the insurance on their own prop- erty. They are going to put on an “educational campaign.” Watch their fireworks! “I look upon conscription as the taproot of militarism; unless THAT is cut, all our labors will eventually be in’ vain” — GENERAL J. C..
