Mills "Mills by the jury in the federal dis- trict court at Fargo on April 1 brings to an end the charges against League men brought under federal laws. There were five of these cases alto- gether, and now, with the verdict for Mr. Mills, all are disposed of in favor of the organized farmers. Previously J. W. Brinton and John V. Free were acquitted by federal juries. The grand jury dismissed the charges brought against’ Leo Horst, and charges brought against a League organizer in Idaho were dismissed on the motion of the agent of the depart- ment of justice. The testimony brought against Walter Thomas Mills was of such a malicious and frivolous character that Federal Judge Amidon directed the jury to bring in a ver- dict of acquittal. CONCERNING THE PRAIRIE FARMER _In the January 20 issue of the Non- partisan Leader, there was an article discussing the influence of packer ad- vertising on farm papers. The article stated that the Prairie Farmer of Chicago, Ill., formerly a bitter foe of the packers, during 1918 failed to mention the report of the federal trade commission and ignored the whole struggle which was going on between the farmers and stockmen on one side and the packers on the other. It was also pointed out that the Prai- rie Farmer had been carrying packer advertising, and the question was asked whether this advertising had caused the Prairie Farmer to quit its fight on the packers. Under date of February 19, the edi- tor of the Prairie Farmer, Clifford V. Gregory, wrote a letter to the Leader, stating . that we were mistaken in these statements about the Prairie Farmer. Mr. Gregory inclosed a clip- ping of an editorial in his January 25, 1919, issue and another clipping of an editorial which carried no date. Both of these editorials are very fair to the farmers and stockmen and take an attitude towards the packers with which nobody can take exception. The criticism of the Leader applied to the Prairie Farmer during 1918. The article was from our Washington bureau, and the facts used were based “on a careful study of all the farm pa- pers in the country made by a mem- ber of the United States department of agriculture. While Mr. Gregory's editorials published after our article do not refute the statements we made, we are perfectly willing to state in | fairness that the ‘position taken by the Prairie Farmer regarding the packers” during January this year is perfectly satisfactory. : In the course of his letter, Mr. Greg- ory says: “Any one who knows Prairie Farm- er knows that we can not be influ- enced by anybody’s advertising. We accept the advertising of Armour and Swift because we know that our read- ers will take it for what it is worth and we feel that we can use the money that they pay us for this advertising to good advantage in making Prairie Farmer a better paper and of greater service to its readers.” . farm papers for taking packer adver- tising in cases where the publisher has made his position perfectly plain regardmg the packing trust, and if -Gregory’s paper continues the January 25 issue, published subse- quent to our criticism, it is perfectly enced by packer advertising. We are only too. glad to make this statement in the interest of fair play.
