Tunderstand the Nonpartisan league is busy with propaganda and organi- zation, etc., and opposing the imperial profiteers of the United States. You have started a number of enterprises, but why don’t you start a bank? You have certainly enough collateral on hand to do so. And among all hands there should be enough bonds to an- swer and if they can not be used as collateral (as I have seen stated in one or two papers giving a short “no” unexplained), you can sell them and raise enough to answer the require- ments. : This is a far-reaching question, but my impression is the farmer and la- borer have as much right to go into the banking business as any other, and the money used would be an ad- vantage to both the borrower and de- positor. And, after all is said, it is those who handle the cash and credit of a country or section that reap a benefit therefrom not always justifi- able. I think you should invite the attention of your foremost Nonpar- tisan leaguers and probe the matter to its bottom, and make use of it as well to recommend it to others in other sections, states, ete. . E. SCHOCH. The action of. the Nonpartisan league legislators of North Dakota in starting a state bank shows that the League is fully alive to the impor- tance of the matter suggested by Mr. Schoch. As a purely political organi- zation of farmers, however, the League can not enter the private banking field. Many of its members are doing so with profit. The govern- ment bonds Mr. Schoch refers to are about the best collateral in the world for any purpose whatever. Those who assert that the people are too ignorant to pass on foreign policy, might reflect that if diplomats had the faith the people have in the square . deal, the world would not be in such a mess.
