Editor Nonpartisan Leader: Inclosed find a clipping from the Chicago Herald-Examiner in regard to the sheep industry. (The clipping tells about the recent break in mutton and sheep prices.) It is amusing to any one acquainted with' the packers’ methods. ~ It would almost seem as though the writer really thought the demand of the consumer had some- thing to do with the break in prices. I can not help but wonder how long the farmers of the country are going to stand for this sort of plundering. Six months ago our food administra- tion was urging us to increase our livestock production, with no small emphasis on the importance of the sheep industry to feed and clothe the world. Every cheap-John “Successful Farming” magazine in the country lauded the wonderful efforts-of the packers to help win the war. They alone seemed to be the only true pa- triots. For once one would have thought they would lay aside their greed. But no, the temptation to squeeze a few more millions out of our hidés is too great; so they fill their cold storage plants with our cheapened product and later will sell it to the consumers at an advanced price—because sheep will have be- come scarce. : This sort of thing is ruining our agricultural prosperity. Public own- ership and fixed prices will enable us to build up a livestock industry worthy of our great country. So we say, “On with your program,” and may you al- ways carry the interests of the com- mon people at heart as you have in | the past few years. EDWIN L. BAGGE. SUGGESTS MOVIE PLAY Erie, Pa. Editor Nonpartlsan Leader: Referring again to the subJect of interest, depreciation, etc., on Liberty issues: I note the financial writers now say that the interest rate on the fifth loan “might as well be made 4% per cent, as former issues are selling | on that basis.” Pretty cold comfort for the thousands who have already had to take the loss, and the millions still holding the bonds who may want to sell hereafter, for certainly the fifth issue will sell higher and go to par first. 1 see many sly dxgs at the farmers and af union labor in the movies. The special interests are not neglecting this means of artful propaganda. Can you not counter by having a great play screened, or a series? The unions are about to do this. Some big screen feature showing that which would ap- -peal to the consumer in cities and the producers in small towns. It would seem to me a wise thing for the League to undertake, either alone or in co-operation with union labor. Either dramatize some great novel bearing on country and city life alike, or se- cure a new one adapted to the purpose: J. L. PELTON. - KEEPS UP INTEREST Granite Falls, Minn. Editor Nonpartisan Leader: I am now in business in town, so I can not be a member of the League any more, but that is not going to'stop me from working. for it whenever I have a chance. = I did not get to send in my vote for A. C. Townley, but am glad to know that he was elected for another term, and here is w15hmg him all kinds of .good luck in his good work. Lo ALBERT H WEFLEN, Formerly of Renvxlle county, N. D.
