Sp01led Wheat for Belgian Relief : Interestmg Editorial in Brooklyn (N. Y.) Standard Union Gives Charges Made in Court by Food Expert (Brooklyn Standard Union) T IS reported that Chief is conducting a John Doe inquiry anent the recent milk scandal, nearly fell ; out of his chair when he heard an interjected bit of testimony given by Raymond Smith, one of the witnesses summoned to testify by the district attorney. And it certainly was of a most sen- sational character. It in effect charged wholesale mur- der agamst the wheat-swindling mill- . ers in the West who held up the wheat in order to manipulate the market. Mr. Smith, who was formerly an employe of the state agricultural de- “partment and is now an investigator for the federal food commission, testi- fied to certain blackmail proceedings on the part of an association of feed dealers in this state. These dealers charged the farmers exorbitant rates for feed. FARMERS’ CLUB . s DENIED FEED In one ‘instance the- farmers club- bed together and bought a carload of wheat. Through a spy system equal to anything Germany established or tried to establish in this country the dealers learned of the transaction, and immediately threatened that if the miller who sold the feed to the farmers did not cancel the sale they would not deal with him any more. As the association contained about all those in the feed business the miller was frightened. Tracers were-sent out after the car and its destination changed. When the attorney general under- took to prosecute the feed dealers the association immediately dissolved. And, strange to say, the records of the testimony taken against them were all returned-to the representatives of the accused dealers, who straightway slip- ped over to Jersey and again incor- porated. Their political pull exceeded that of the farmers. . If this testimony is not contradicted and disproved there will be a serious miscarriage of justice jin this state should the blackmailing and swindling feed dealers escape indictment, con- viction and a term in jail. All this was sensational enough, but the worst was yet to come. SPOILED WHEAT SOLD AT HIGH PRICES Prefacing the interjected Eéfimony referred to above with the remark that Magistrate McAdoo, who . were domg without wheat altogether or consuming it in very small quan- tities, so it could be furnished to the ‘soldiers and the starving victims of Germany in Europe; but to send rot- ten, poisonous wheat to the Belgians, from consuming which many unfor- tunates died, is little short of murder —murder, too, paid for by generous Americans who gave their money lavishly that the helpless sufferers of the great war in Europe might be re- lieved and their lives saved. The I.-W. W. are respectable com- pared with the wheat poisoners. The testimony of Raymond Smith- can not be allowed to go unnoticed, unless there are men “higher up” in- terested in saving the wheat manip- ulators and poisoners from the pun- ishment justly due their crimes. That there has been a good deal of favorit- ism and downright grafting in con- nection with the spending of the bil- lions of dollars raised to defray our share of the expenses of the great war was to be expected. It was perhaps inevitable in the circumstances of forc- ed preparation caused by the criminal failure to prepare before; but that -even wheat speculators, -who would have no scruple about swindling the people, could be found to send poison- ous food to the unfortunate victims of the war in Belgium is very hard to believe. It is almost inconceivable men could be .so vilely base. ADVERTISEMENTS Special As long as our present supply of steel lasts you can buy at 1917 Prices Act at once. We have confidence enough in the Brool kflzl the death of hundreds and perhaps thousands of Belgians, because he might not hive the opportunity to do so again, Witness Smith made the revelation that so startled Maglstrate McAdoo. There were no qualifications about the damaging testimony. - Smith declared large quantities of wheat had been held in the bins in Minneapolis for the purpose of re- stricting the quantity and forcing up the prices. This wheat was held so long it moulded and became rotten. Then, according to the witness, it was .sent to Liverpool, after which it made its way to Belgium, where thousands of women and children are reported to have died from eating it when made into bread. “Let it be remembered this witness is a federal employe.
