Steen of New York City, presi- dent of the National As- sociation of City Editors, advising him that he had ] been given an honorary position on the board of governors for a nation-wide campaign against anarchy and bol- shevism, Governor Frazier of North Dakota sent the following message: Clyde P. Steen, President, National Assn. of City Edltors, New York, N. Y. Dear Sir: I have your telegram notifying me that I have been ap- pointed on the board of governors for a nation-wide campaign to be launched against every manifestation of anar- chy and to safeguard American liber- ties, American labor, American homes and American schools, and wish to as- sure you that I am in hearty sympathy with the announced aims of your or- ganization. NORTH DAKOTA HAS TAKEN INITIATIVE Perhaps you are aware that North Dakota has taken the initiative in this matter and is the first state in the Union to propose and enact into law a program which not only safeguards American homes, American liberties, sAmerican labor and American schools, but extends democracy into industry ‘and promises to relieve the producers and consumers of this state from the systematic exploitation by the monop- olists who control our markets. Here in North Dakota we believe the best protection against revolution is to assist rather than retard evolution and in this state it is the intention of .the administration to remove discontent and prevent disorder by remedying the legitimate economic complaints of the people instead of trying to stamp out just grievances. Asa consequence we have a contented cmzenry in North Dakota which believes in upholding our government and achieving polit- ical progress by orderly and constitu- tional methods. . As I stated before, I am in hearty sympathy with the announced aims of your association and will cordially co- operate with you to the end that American liberties, American homes, American labor and American schools be upbuilt and bettered, but in all candor I want to warn you against the danger of allowing this move to be misdirected into a camouflaged cam- paign against those liberal forces in America which stand for the improve- ment of industrial and political con- ditions. . BOURBONISM PRODUCES BAD CONDITIONS Personally, I feel that bolshevism is not the only peril to this country. In my opinion the spirit of bourbonism is even more threatening to the secu- rity of our institutions, for, scanning back through history, it seems to me that bourbonism always precedes and is the cause of bolshevism. It was bourbonism that resulted French revolution, and it was the op- pression of -the czar that is primarily ‘responsible for the present unhappy plight of Russia. I can not help feel- ing the Bolsheviki are the effect of centuries of semi-oriental despotism -and that the chief blame for present conditions in Russia*Pust be traced’ to the doors of the Romanoffs, 3 I trust that your association per- ceives the necessity of progress and realizes changing economic and indus- trial conditions demand intelligent leg- islation and new governmental activi- ties. If you possess this vision, your cam- reactionary paign will be of Iinestimable benefit, in the ' with_his spurs. for after all education is the real sol- vent of our problems, but if you per- mit yourselves to be as shock troops in the fight which certain sinister in- terests are conducting against desired governmental changes in this country, your influence will be harmful instead of helpful. Permit me to thank you for the honor you have done me and to as- sure you that I° will assist the ac- complishment of your announced in- tentions with every.means at my com- mand. I do this all the more gladly because I am a firin believer in the power of the press and here in North Dakota we lead in this reform also. The people of this state own, con- trol and operate two dailies and more than 40 weekly papers which are con- ducted for public welfare and educa- tional purposes instead of for private purposes and profits. We have freed the press of North Dakota from the control of the -advertisers and, know- ing the editors of these papers as I do, I think I can assure you that they, too, will co-operate with your associa- tion so long as they find its work hon- estly constructive. Yours very tuuly, LYNN J. FRAZIER, Governor of North Dakota. A WIDE-AWAKE LEAGUER Centralia, Wash. Editor Nonpartisan Leader: Under another cover I am sending you a copy of the Farmers’ News (7). Well, it is a dandy. If ignorance is “the only darkness,” this is certainly a very black sheet. Maybe, after all, it is a case of overproduction of brain and a lack of market for it. Anyway, don’t let me bother you, but get the goods direct from the factory. I am not a subscriber to this rabid anti- peoples paper, but it Just came as a z mlssmnary We need help rlght here in this state of Washington now. ' Those who read this filthy anti-farmer sheet, and have no chance to know the facts, will often be misled by its misrepresen- tations. I was very much surprised the other day when one of my neigh- bors spoke in a believing spirit of this same paper. I had thought that their statements were too “raw” to be believed by any thinking man. A few months ago a few political “wire pullers” caused the jailing of two Nonpartisan league organizers in Lewis county. Their bonds were placed at $6,000 and then the word was sent out that they could not get bondsmen.. The farmers rushed in and raised a sum pretty close to the $25,000 mark. Nothing has been done since and the perpetrators of the crime went scot free. Some of them are in office now, while the campaign against the farmers goes merrily on. Mr. Stadlard and Mr. Edwards were innocent of any crime, unless it is a crime for the farmers to organize for protection. against their enemies. I offered to contribute $10 toward a fund to prosecute those intentional wrongdoers and there is no doubt enough money could easily have been raised to cover all expense. However, it is all right if we can get the right kind of work done in the near future. J. H. WEST. DISARMING THE ANIMALS In regard to disarmament it now appears that the American eagle be- lieves in pulling all teeth and the British lion in clipping all tail feath- ers, but both evidently are agreed on cutting the dachshund’s tail and tak- ing his bark off. Not even a grunt would be left to the Russian bear and the French cock should have to part 8i: 80x3% 15.20 '15.95 2.50 Hennepin & 12th St., ADVERTISEMENTS DUT THIS CONCRETE ¢ MIXER ON YOUR FARM § You can save many times the cost of a Sheldon Farm Concrete Mixer on a few small jobs.
