This ig 1 get busy at once. ok How f Nation Succeedsasa Merchant (Continued from page 8) England at 40 cents a pound to British workingmen, , The explanation so far offered by the British government is.not satis- factory to ‘the Australian producers and is most h\muhatmg to the Ameri- can_democracy. The explanation offered is that in order to get a sufficient supply the British government was oblig- ed to pay the American beef - trust so large a price that, so far as American beef was concerned, its selling price had te be put above 40 cents, and the Australian and American beef was lumped together- and sold at the general average of 40 cents. It costs 2 cents a pound to deliver the Aus- tralian beef in the British mar- ket. The retail price, according to the transactions of the Austra- lasian governments acting as merchants at home, if the selling price there is 15 cents, in Great Britain it should have been 17 cents. It was 40 cents because 23 cents was added to the selling ' price of the Australian beef and this added price on the Australian product turned over to the Ameri- can beef trust in order to secure American supplies to win the world war for democracy. ) Publicly owned markets can best fix the price not by‘a price-fixing com-_ mittee to fix the prices in privately owned markets but by furnishing the yards at just prices in the people’s own markets. That is what happened with the nation as a merchant. (The subject of the next article in this series will be “The Nation as a Guardian.”) INDUSTRIAL ORGANIZATION Madison, Wis. Edltor Nonpartisan. Leader: I, like M. L. Amos of Ellsworth, Kan., have a message. First, the League has a legitimate function on the political field, which gives it a right to-existence. Second, it is a farmers’ organization and all farmers should support it. Third, there is a field for a farmers’ organization on the industrial field such as the American Society of Equity, Farmers’ union or the Grange. - I suggest that all members of the League, who are not already members of one of these organizations, join And as the largest and most influential of any in the Northwest, I suggest that League members in Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Montana join the American Society of Equity. This_is necessary in order to estab- lish: co-operative activities on the: in= dustrial -field. I say this use at our last national convention, provi- sions were made so that the local, state and national co-operative activi- ties may co-ordinate or work together; also, to establish departments of vari- destined to make this organization much more power- ful and influential than any similar organization in this country. I hope every Nonpartisan leaguer will see the force of my argument and Will gladly answer any inquiry. Wishing all a Merry Christmas, T am truly, - - J. WELLER LONG, Sec.-Treas. American Soclety of .
