o WVV.a'shing't\on Gféhge Hcéd Freed ~ Prosecutor Withdraws Frame-Up Case Before Time for Trial—No Redress for Injury m=EDERAL JUDGE NET- #| ERER of the district court of Seattle, Wash., ‘has dismissed the widely heralded. eharges against William Bouck, ' master of the Washington state Grange. The case, in fact, never came to trial, for Prosecutor Clarence I. Reames asked the judge to dismiss the charges be- cause he could not substantiate them.’ Thus another grievous wrong has been done the cause of the organized farmers by those supposed-to enforce the law impartially, and there is no ° redress. Readers of the Leader will recall that Mr. Bouck incurred the enmity ..of the old political gang in Wash- ington - by advising the farmers to unite for political action.. Shortly thereafter the special privilege gang in ‘Walla Walla drove a convention of the Grange farmers. out of the city - under circumstances that aroused the farmer and labor population of Wash- ington. The gang realized that it had' overplayed its hand and began to hunt for cover. The cover it found was a frame-up case against State - Master Bouck in which a federal at- Jdorney was found willing to be the dirty go-between, MISUSE OF OFFICE R This false accusation of disloyalty served two purposes. It proved, so . the kept-press said, that the Walla ~progressive Walla gang was right in turning out a farmers’ convention under such “disreputable” leadership as William Bouck. It was used against every candidate in the last election who dared espouse the cause.'of the com- mon people. The fact that it was a federal indictment was made a spe- cial feature of the special interest publicity. We are now asked to believe that the prosecuting attorney did not know he 'had a frame-up case before the primary election and the regular elec- tion as he knows now. We are asked to believe that he did not know the Grange was sypporting initiative pe- titions of a progressive character and candidates, and that those who brought ‘the false witriess were all with the interests opposed to these steps. 'This® same prosecutor also, in speaking before the Seattle Chamber of Commerce, evidently among friends, said: : _“We could ruin all in this room. Through the press we could point the finger of suspicion at you and the | mischief would be done.” And then he added: “We are not going to abuse this power.” . History now shows that he did mis- use it in a most contemptible fashion when he pointed the finger at William Bouck. ; CASE AROUSED PEOPLE -~ . The Yakima Valley (Wash.) Farm- er has this to say of the case: “In some particulars the arrest of Bouck had exactly the opposite effect to that intended by its promoters. It aroused progressive farmers and or- ganizéd labor throughout the state, and thousands of dollars were imme- diately pledged for "his .defense. state-wide organization known as the Legal Defense committee was formed to finance the defense iof Bouck and - any others who might be persecuted ‘by enemies of organized farmers and AN - organized labor.” ° X aine (Wash.) _Jdlirnal' re- A\l weakness of its case, as admitted by the district attorney. Those who be- lieved from the first that this case was a case of persecution for polit- ical purposes now have something to back up their belief.” FOR GOVERNMENT CONTROL To the Honorable Representatives in Congress From the State of Kansas: We believe at this time we should convey to you the feeling of the rail- road employes regarding the dispo- sition ef the railroad question.
