The report of the second quarter of 1918, two years later, showed 1,388 paid up Union members, a gain of over 20 per cent. This gain was made in the face of the fact that North Dakota was already strongly organized in the Equity and the'-Grange and that for years the } 8 are ahead for the man- tramed in automobxle, tractor and ‘truck : %unzl. Here is the message in full which ~ Mr. Amos wishes to present: There are strong indications at this time of a disastrous slump in the membership of our ' Farmers’ union because of the attitude of its state press toward the Nonpartisan league. The League is making substantial growth in Kansas, and now that the farmers of North Dakota have again approved farmer administration in the recent election, Kansas farmers will join faster than ever. Many of these League farmers are now Union members and will continue so if treated fairly, but they will not long support an organization whose state officers fight their individual and _collective interests and who are con- tinued in office through steam-roller tactics such as were used at the Wich- ita convention last year. At that time seven state officers were elected sep- arately in six minutes. Some may ask: “In what ways have our interests been opposed?” It is to the farmers’ interest to be able to get cars for shipping their grain, to get other general service for their co-operative elevators; to abolish discrimination in freight rates; and to have fair and equitable adjustment of | taxes and many other things. We can’ farmers there had had their-co-opera- tive elevéitors and even a prosperous terminal elevator at St. Paul. ‘While he published a letter from R. B. Our state president, Mr. McAuliff, used our state paper to fight thls League organization, a farmer organ- ization composed of the same men as belong to the Union. He refused to publish resolutions favoring the League and on September 18, 1917, threatened to suspend the charter of any local for so doing. Yet in the fol- - lowing issue ofithe paper for Septem- ber 20 he published resolutions con- demning the League. He falsely stated in the December 6, 1917, issue that “the Union started on the down hill in North Dakota with the advgfl'/of ‘the League.” = - Again on December 27, 1917 He pub- lished a letter from R. The above statements are either true or false, and ‘if false they are un- doubtedly intentionally false with the .purpose of misleading the Union mem- ‘bers of Kansas.
