He complains, however, that the League is socialistic.' He does not charge that it is allied with the pack- ers, or that the editor of the Leader attended the little conference referred to. Mr®Secor once studied the League program on a special trip for the pur- pose to North Dakota. He returned and wrote a glowing account of his trip for Successful Farming. Mr. Secor then found nothing “socialistic,” and therefore damnable, about the League program. The League pro- gram, has not been changed by so much as the insertion of a punctua- tion mark since then. But in the meantime Successful Farming and Mr. Secor have “found out” that the League program is “socialistic,” and they are now against it. In the mean- time Mr.. Meredith has had a confer- ence with the packers, and doubtless other advertisers have been consulted ‘with! But think how silly it is to attempt to damn something by calling it names! Calling it names will not change the program, which is definite and written. Any one can read and understand it. The questmn is, not what name to call it, but is it RIGET ? Is it JUST? Will it solve the pohtlca.l and economic abuses at which it is aimed? The time is past when men of Mr. Secor’s and Mr. Meredith’s type can scare people by calling names. Ignorant farmers are a thing of the past. These farm paper editors are not dealing with children who think name-calling is argument. They are dealing with intelligent American citi- zens, who approve or disapprove of the League program on its MERITS, not because someone calls that program some kind of an “ism,” or other name. Justr one more word Mr. Secor, Te- garding a statement you made to L. O. Kelly of Scandia, Kan. You stated a gross untruth when you said all the League officers and committees and organizers -were Socialists, and any- way, the officers and organizers of the League ARE NONE OF YOUR BUSI- NESS. These are matters for the consideration of LEAGUE MEM- If YOU want a say, pay your $16 and sit in—but you can’t do that, for your’re not a farmer. Also, the plan of organization of the League is NONE OF YOUR BUSI- NESS, Mr. Secor. Right or wrong, that plan of organization-is the busi- ness of the League and not OUT- SIDERS — especially publishers of farm papers who attend conferences of packers. If the League plan of or- ganization is not successful, it will be changed by the members. It is none of the business of farm paper editors. The program of the League, however, IS public business, because the organ- ized farmers are seeking to make it into law. Therefore, discuss the pro- .gram. Tell us what the packers think of the League program, Mr. Secor. That will be interesting! THREATEN TO USE THE - SQUEEZE " A farmer was telling us of a bank on this line 'threatening to foreclose on his land unless this year’s interest is paid. He has not paid last year’s interest but could do that much— would not the bank carry him for this year's interest till next fall? No. Would the bank accept the payment of the whole mortgage to dt!.aa No, it didn’t purpose to lose this loan at 9 per cent, with 12 per cent after dne, absolutely not; but if this year's in- terest is not paxd it will foreclose the loan. What do you think about that sort of legal chicanery to push this farmer to the wall? = Talk about Shy- “lock and his pound of flesh! If this bank pushes the matter to a conclu- sion we will give it some advertising it is not looking for and, incidentally, show you the beauty of the banking situation up and down this line~—~ PARSHALL (N.
