Many bogus war agencies were formed as cover for underground work against the League, and war bodies such as the safety commission of Minnesota,‘ many county safety commissions there, the councils of defense of Iowa and Nebraska and other states have openly used their special powers and funds for attacking the League. Some of the old party henchmen were able to turn even the Red Cross and the Y. M. C. A. in some sections into po- litical weapons. Draft boards also have been biased by the paw of the special interests. An illustration of another common kind of attack recently came to light in Minnesota. At harvest time farm- ers are frequently in urgent need of small repair parts. The harvester trust instructed its agents to talk against the League when the farmers came in for these parts, and if the farmer were to promise to leave the League he was to get his small re- pairs for nothing. They were to be charged to the trust. But if the farmer stuck by his guns he had to pay or, what is more probably the case, was frequently denied the nec- essary repairs. The local agents of every kind of special interest—insur- ance men, grain buyers, potato buy- ers, etc.—got their orders from the home office to use every kind of pres- sure against the organized farmers. The = recent McMaster forgery brought to light in North Dakota rep- resents another kind of old-gang tac- tics. The surprising thing in this case, however, was that McMaster got caught and was given three years in prison for- the seditious letter to which he had forged a League man’s name to hurt the League. Two months previously the kept press was kiting about the country a whole set of forged resolutions, alleged to have been passed by League farmers in North Dakota. At the end of the campaign Theo- dore Roosevelt was brought into the Northwest, freight paid by the old gang, to say a benediction- on the atrocities that had been committed. He was, of course, able to look over the whole work of the -plunderbund and pronounce it good, just as a few years ago he looked over German Jjunkerism at close range and brought back the story to us that it was very good. : But if the farmers have had an un- usually difficult time in exercising the lawful and natural right to organize, they have learned what is necessary to secure greater victories in the fu- ture.
