Its full name is St. Paul Pmnear Press Dispatch (a hyphenated newspaper) but they call It Stupid for short. Stupid pnmary, but every day since has had a front page article attack- ing the League and a leading editorial assailing it. Stupid prmted a cartoon showing thg League being laid to peaceful rest in a grave. That was over a month ago, but this merely pictured Stupid’s wish and not the facts. Stupid throws a fit every day about the organized farmers and seems to be pretty much worried over a mere, harmless corpsc. Stupid printed great headlines on the front page about the “disloyalty” of the League and “treason” of Mr. Townley, while the grand jury was indicting him and while the case was argued, but when Mr. Townlcy and the League were vindicated by the supreme court and the prosecution found to have been brought for political purposes, Stupid made a nice little inconspicuous item about it on the back page! That is Stupid’s idea about news, and it thinks people can not see through it! That’s why Stupid is stupid! Even some of the most bitter press enemies of the organized farmers made front page stories of the Townley vindication—but not Stupid. Stupid said that the New York Mail, charged with belonging to the German government, had. been “an enthusiastic and- consistent supporter” of the Non- partisan league, when the Mail’s bitter and prejudiced attacks on the League were well known to everybody. But Stupid wouldn’t be living up to its name if it did not furnish ammunition for the League by publishing misrepresenta- tions that every one can see through. Stupid said that the Nonpartisan league was misquoting President Wilson and that it was a shame. Stupid had a right to te angry about it because it is such a good friend of President Wilson’s that it publishes all of the stuff against the president written by the Terrible Teddy, which gives aid and comfort to the enemies of the United States. But everybody knows that the League is not misquoting the president, because it is circulating the president’s entire book, “The New Freedom,” and not. merely passages from it. The.
