S S T S A “three years without success. of the politicians who seek to discredit farmers’ business enterprises, because it all goes to undermine the solidarity of the fax;mers and prevent their suc- cess politically. That is why there is an attempt made to discredit the Nonpartisan league by discrediting the United Stores company. “You may be assured that, regard- less of what the form: of organization of these stores was and regardless of in whose hands the farmers placed the management, these attacks would have been made. We know they would have been made, because the papers that are now attacking the Consumers’ United Stores company are the same papers which attacked George S. Lof- tus, which attacked the Equity Co-op- erative exchange, which have fought against farmers’ co-operative institu- tions everywhere, and which have been fighting the Nonpartisan league for Do you think these newspapers and these in- terests are capable of treating fairly any farmers’ organization or business enterprise? NEWSPAPERS ADMIT PLAN IS HONEST _ “If there was anything crooked about the Consumers’ United Stores company or its plan or organization, as these assassins of character and enemies of the farmers have intimated, ADVERTISEMENTS For Wheatless Days OUR NEW Liberty Biscuits A healthful combination of— Oatmeal, Barley Flour, Corn Flour, Sterilized Bran, Whole Wheat ‘With enly enough sugar and shorten- ing to make them crisp and delight- ful to eat. Write for Price List do you think that these five stores would be doing business, or that the management of this company would be out of jail? As a matter of fact, representatives of the anti-farmer press of North Dakota, and the inter- ests they serve, have been engaged for months in trying to find out something crooked or illegal about the Consumers’ United Stores com- pany. Do you think that if they had found anything illegal or dishonest that they would have quit with NEWSPAPER ATTACKS? No; they would have had the stores closed through court action, and would have had its management in jail. ‘“The best proof that the Consumers’ United Stores company is a legitimate farmers’ co-operative organization is the fact that the enemies of this farm- ers’ enterprise have been unable to find anything illegal or dishonest about the company, as evidenced by the following statement, taken from the Fargo Forum’s article attacking us: ““There is nothing unlawful or dishonest in the plan they have outlined, although it gives them every opportunity in the world for misusing funds entrusted to them.’ “There you have the word of the enemies of this farmers’ enterprise to the effect that the company is lawful and honest. Why the kick then? Sim- ply because it is the policy of these papers to fight every farmers’ organ- ization and every farmers’ business enterprise. ‘“J. W. BRINTON, “General Manager, Consumers’ United Stores Company.” New Educational | Appomtments The election of Dr. Thomas Franklin Kane as president of the University of North Dakota has been announced by the board of regents. Dr. Kane has been president of Olivet -colleges, Michigan, and president of the Uni- versity of Washington, Seattle, Wash. In both of these positions he made excellent records. A faculty commit- tee of the University of North Dakota approved the choice, recommending Dr. Kane to the regents. The regents have also elected Dr. Louis Van Es, state veterinarian for many years, as director of the North Dakota Experiment station, to take the place of Thomas Cooper, and Gor- don W. Randlett as head of the exten- sion department of the agricultural de- partment. Both of these men are well known to the farmers of North Dakota. The work of Dr. Van Es at the Agri- cultural college was related in the Leader several months - ago. Mr. Randlett, formerly a North Dakota man, has made a good record as head of -extension work in South Dakota for the last four years. Three of the five present members of the board of regents are appointees of Governor Frazier, therefore credit for the new appointments, expected to strengthen the work at both the Uni- versity and Agricultural college, is due to the farmer administration of North Dakota. PLAYING BOTH ENDS For several months the organs of the Anaconda Copper Mining com- pany were trying to convince the farmers of Montana that the miners of Butte were a lawless bunch. Now these same organs are trying to con- vince the miners of Butte that the farmers of Montana are a lawless bunch. Before they get through they will have convinced both the farmers and the miners that the Anaconda Copper Mining company and their kept pen-pushers are a lawless bunch. —BUTTE (MONT.)
