Write us today. Neal Institute Fargo. Arthur Lillegren, Mgr.—Ady. ; Mention Leader'when writing advertisers South Dakota’s View (From the Aberdeen (S. D.) Daily American). Election of John M. Baer in North Dakota as congressman in the First district marks the entrance of the Nonpartisan league into national poli- tics and its initial victory therein as well. In the past the farmer organization has been content to take part in state elections and develop ideas of state government as its program. With its growth into a national or- ganization, it wag in keeping with the expansion to take part in national af- fairs and success in the first congres- sional election is a good omen for the future. Certainly there is a field for work in Washington of men who believe as do the members of the league. There is too much lost motion between the producer and the consumer. The pro- ducer too often fails to get his share of what the consumer pays for his product. Regulation of distribution and marketing in war time is appprov- ed as a matter of justice.. It is the government’s means of protecting the public against food gamblers and de- signing milldem n. All the league asks is that similar regulations be carried out in times of peace, when it is just as deeply need- ed. We haven’t recognized it as clear- ly as now, but the war is bringing en- lightment. Why Not Organize? (From the Fergus Falls, Minn., : Free Press). Some of our exchanges are warning their farmer readers to beware of the Nonpartisan league. Why this anxiety? What-is there in the Nonpartisan league to make the farmers beware? Are its principles detrimental to the farmers’ interests? Is there any reason why the farmers should not form a league for concert- ed action in political affairs? Is there any reason why the farmers should not work together politically as well as manufacturers, the corporations and the capitalists? We do not know whether the men who are at the head of the Nonpartisan league movement are the best and the wisest men in the world or not, but from what we do know of them they are zealous and sincere. They believe in the League principles and honestly desire team-work among the producers to accomplish political reforms that will be to their benefit. We also know that , if the present leaders of the League movement are not. the right men to have there, the members of the League will have it in their power to displace them, just as political parties at all times have thrown out objection- able leaders and put new leaders in their places. BANDWAGON PAPERS The press controlled by special in- terests is much perturbed over the widespread movemen: to take over newspapers by the farmers. They are trying to give the impres- sion in this way the League men are attempting to punish opposition. This is the wrong attitude. The farmers feel that.they must have organs they can depend upon to furnish them with the facts and fight their battles, Papers controlled by private inter- ests may support them when they are strong, but they are inclined to re- lapse just at the critical time when they need their assistance the most. They, in other words, can be depend- ed upon to support a sure winner every time, but to be on the other side in close contests.—PUBLIC OPINION, Bismarck, N. D. WHY NOT? The federal trade commission, a body appointed by Commander-in- chief Woodrow Wilson, reports: “The coal industry is paralyzing the industries of the country, and- the coal industry itself is paralyzed by the failure of transportation.” ‘War transportation has been in the ‘hands of distinguished railroaders of the national defense council for months, with little apparent relief. Congress has under consideration about a dozen fuel regulation measurss upon which it will probably chew for weeks to come. ‘Why does not the government take over the railroads and mines? It has taken over the men between the ages of 21 and 81.—ST. PAUL DAILY NEWS, CROW VS. BAER The Grand Forks Herald and the Fargo Forum are eating crow now, but they were trylng to eat Baer a few days ago—MINOT (N, D.) DAILY NEWS.
