every vote. and floundered around. The Grand Forks Herald welecomed it into the ranks of the anti-farmer press and reprinted the Forum attacks on its front page. About this time the tremendously big League meeting at Iargo took place, and the Forum laid down cold. It quit. It began to purr soft words and it has been purring them ever sinee. . But this isn’t go- ing to fool anybody. It simply means that the Forum has seen, how Toolish it was to lose its head—how it has spoiled its own game. It is indicated very plainly that the Forum is going back to its original plan. It is going to try and undo what it has done. It is going to try to shake off the stigma of having lined up with the Herald and the Tribune in the fight on the farmers. Then, when it thinks it has suf- ficiently proved it is not fighting the farmers, it is going to engage in an insinuating line of attack on the League that it thinks there is some chance of getting away with. But the League is onto you, Mr. Forum. So is the Leader. So are the farmers of North Dakota. You have queered your sly little game. You are tarred with the same stick as the Herald and Tribune and it won’t rub off. * * * CAUGHT WITH THE GOODS OT the least amusing feature of the Forum’s getting in bad N was the way it tried to get out of the charge of being a liar. ‘When the Forum was printing its vicious editorial ajtacks on Mr. Townley and the League on account of Mr. Townley’s position on the war, the Forum published on the front page what purported to be a news report of Mr. Townley’s remarks at Jamestown. In this report Mr. Townley was made by the Forum to utter near-treasonable state- ments. The I'orum printed this to give a basis of fact for its charge that Townley was a traitor. But this Forum ‘‘news’’ report of the Jamestown remarks of Mr. Townley was made up out of whole cloth. Mr. Townley never said what the Forum said he said, or anything remotely approaching it. Warning to Leagsue Here is a reproduction of the official ballot for the special elee- tion July 10 in the First Con- gressional distriet of North Dako- ta. At this election JOHN M. BAER IS THE FARMERS’ CAN- DIDATE INDORSED BY THE NONPARTISAN LEAGUE. To vote for Baer mark an *“X’’ in the square after his name, as shown on the ballot herewith. word “‘Nonpartisan.”’ MARK YOUR “X” IN THE SQUARE AFTER THE NAME OF “JOIN OFFICIAL The old gang and the anti-farmer press claim that the League’s strength has waned since the election last fall. They are counting on that to beat Baer, farmers’ man for congress. Baer needs HE NEEDS YOUR VOTE. Let nothing keep you from the polls July 10. A stenographic report of the meeting and what the League president said was taken, proving absolutely the Forum’s report was a fake pure and simple. \ The next morning the Fargo Courier-News on its iront page frankly and openly branded the Forum story of Townley’s remarks as untrue. In polite language it called the Forum a blamed liar. This was putting it up to the Forum pretty strong. But the TForum, caught with the goods, did not deny it was a liar. In refusing to defend itself it admitted the Courier-News’ proof, and stands con- victed of faking Mr. Townley’s words to suit its own purposes. ¥ * * THE ATTEMPT TO SQUIRM OUT HEN the Fargo meeting was held. Mr. Townley repeated his I remarks at Jamestown almost word for word, as the stenogra« phic reports of the two meetings show. Fargo people had full opportunity to see that his language was not treasonable. They did see. The Forum was doubly convicted of gross and unfair misrepresentation —first by not answering the Courier-News charge that it was a liar, and second by the verdict of Fargo people who attended the meeting at Fargo. 5 Standing thus doubly convieted, the Forum was in a pretty bad hole. It certainly had gotten into a mess. But the Forum could not ignore the charge and the proof entirely. That would have been fatal, So, not referring directly to the charge and proof of faking, it intimat- ed editorially that Mr. Townley had toned down his speech—that he had not repeated at Fargo the remarks he had made in other parts of the state. Now, do you-suppose that fooled anybody ? The Forum is caught lying about what Mr. Townley said at the meetings around the state. The people of Fargo learn that the Forum report of what Townley said was untrue. The Courier-News proves the Forum a liar and the Forum admits the charge by silence. To get out of the hole, the Forum does not deny its fake. Neither does it de- fend its fake. Tt tries to save its face by saying Mr. Townley changed his remarks; that he toned them down. Can you beat it? the official ballot shown herewith shows the proper way to vote for the farmers’ candidate. M.
