There- fore, as a matter of precaution, he would delay matters for the pres- ent, and not close the deal until %e knew what the outcome would e. If the man is a renter, his em- ployment to manage a large ranch at a liberal salary would be con- tingent upon heading off the League program, which if carried out would be disastrous to the big land owners. A “LEAGUE MEMBER’’ OUT TO PICK A QUARREL The third man would probably be a League member from a dis- tant part of the state, who had left his membership card at home, but who was very enthusiastic, and extremely radical in his views, and who, before he left, would contrive to get into a vio- lent quarrel and probably offer to fight with his brother Leaguer over some side issue, and who would boast that the League leg- islators from his county would support his views. In addition to these methods, jealousy and envy among League speakers would be sedulously in- culcated, and distrust with the leaders awakened. If possible radical and visionary ideas and policies would be proposed by ad- venturers who have come into the state to take a hand in the game. ‘Wherever it could be done, two rival League candidates, especial- ly for the legislature, would be en- couraged to enter the race, in or- der that a conservative might slip in between. Here and there, it was suggested that some form- erly active member might be in- duced for a consideration to pub- Licly repudiate the League, which would furnish ground for the statement or assertion that the League is going to pieces and that the dues, if paid in, would be thrown away or used to enrich a few leaders. JUST A FEW OF THE PLANS TO BREAK THE LEAGUE I ®ave not attempted to outline all of the methods that may be re- sorted to to paralyze the great farmers’ movement in North Da- kota, that were discussed in the lobby, for lack of space. But what I have mentioned should put the farmer on his guard. What they seemed to fear the most was a state-owned flour mill in connection with an elevator. They reasoned that if a grain grower could once get the opportunity and the right to ship his wheat to - & mill and have it turned into flour at the cost of manu- facture, that the ‘**jig was up’’ go far as the big milling in- terests are concerned, for they could then no longer con- trol the markets of the coun- try for their products. The demand*for wheat is confined to the millers, but the demand for flour is universal and the supply could not be cornered or controlled by the few, as it now is. The millions of dollars needed to carry out this campaign of education, it was hinted, would be speedily forth coming and all the big business interests of the na-- tion, not only in Minnesota but in ADVERTISEMENTS WANTED EVERY WOMAN TO USE THE NEW WONDER N. HE work of organizing Kansas for the Nonpartisan League is well under way, with the enthusiastic support of promi- nent farm leaders in several counties. As fast as the League mes- sage can be taken to each community, men are taking up the work, with prospects that promise to put that state in the L.eague column even more rapidly than North Dakota. Speaking of the reception given him, W. H. Talmage, national organizer from St. Paul headquarters in a letter to the Nonpartisan Leader last week said: “While addressing audiences in North Dakota during January and February I met 20,000 farmers, but nowhere saw anything superior to the enthusiasm with which the Xansas men take to the League idea of poli- tical action. Someone seems to have been plowing good and deep in Kan- sas”. Among the first enrolled in the Kansas branch of the League were prominent leaders in Ellsworth and Lincoln counties, among them being the following, all of whom have taken an active part in pushing organization work: Frank Huseman, county president of the Farmers’' Educational and Co- operative Union of America, and a di- rector in a $50,000 farmers’ co-opera- tive business association. : M. L. Amos, a successful farmer, and gecretary of the county union, who for some time past has been asking that a Kansas League -be organized. (Mr. Amos has taken up active field organ- ization work for the League.) Harry E. Kline, county lecturer for the Farmers' Union, and director of a co-operative business association. Chester A. Chapman, county com- missioner and secretary of Walnut Grove local union. Harry Scheuch, president of the Jansen local; John Heiser, president of another local union; H. W. Kohles, secretary of Summit local; and Charles E. Reed, secretary of Rad- cliffe local All of these farmers are enthusiastic about the League, have all signed up for memberships, and offered to go a week at a time to help Mr. Amos make | the counties of Ellsworth, Lincoln and Rice, the banner League counties of Kansas. - FIFTEEN CREAM EGGSAND SHIP %328 Write for Tags and Prices Today MIDLAND PRODUCE COMPANY Mention N.
