SIXTEEN Markets LIVESTOCK SUMMARY In the cattle market at South St. Paul last week the week's deal on the _whole was not encouraging to shippers, for prices did not go up in correspond- ence with the slackening supply due to storms and decreased shipments. The packers took most of the stock offer- ed, as the stocker and feeder business is dragging. Hog prices, however, looked sensa- tional at times during the week, on February ‘1 reaching a top of $11.70. This price for live hogs would have been considered 'unbelievable even a few months ago, but within the past two-weeks, it has lost its startling ef- fect. Prices fluctuated almost as free- ly as they do in the wheat pit on fu- tures, and there-was a spread of two cents on medium to heavy weight stuff. Whether. the light arrivals due to the bad weather affected the local market, or the upgoing prices were part of the general meat scarcity, is hard to say, but - appearances indicate that the cause was not local. Sheep prices advanced during the week, and $14 per 100 was paid for choice fat lambs. Good butchering ewes brought $9.50, a good price com- pared to recent weeks' offerings. The supply continued very scant. WHEAT SUMMARY News that, diplomatic relatioris be- tween the United States and Germany had been separated sent wheat prices tumbling for a few minutes in Chicago and Minneapolis Saturday, but in both these cities and Duluth it rallied, and closed at three to six cents above the . opening, and above the low mark of the day. And yet it is now certain that Europe will have a more difficult time to get wheat from America than ever before. The prices were evidently sus- tained wholly on conditions within this country, and even the rumors of fair .- to good crops in Australia and good prospects in India went unregarded. It appears that wheat quotations in this country; for some time at least, will stand on their own feet. On the whole futures closed- weaker than at the week’s beginning, Minnea- polis May reaching a high point of $1.80 5-8 on Monday, and closing Satur- day at only $1.721-4. The latter figure, however, is four cents better than for either of the two preceding days, - although the low point~sagged lower than anything in that column this week. Similar conditions applied to the July option. Cash wheat also rallied on Saturday above Thursday and.Friday's quota- tions, but did not attain the high figures of Tuesday.
