There was nothing really new during the week but wheat dropped as the rumors ‘emerged from various European capitals. It is ‘apparently regarded by the Wheat traders as a sign that the demand will cease if peace comes suddenly, and at the opening .several different days, traders who had carried over more wheat than they needed to clear their contracts, were glad to sell it at a loss ‘the first thing. Another consideration continues to be the freight embargo by eastern railways. Duluth has been cut off by all but the Soo railway, and its wheat can not reach market. Railway managers are clamor- ing for higher demurrage charges in Minnesota and Wisconsin, claiming that this will cause rapid unloading of cars and help relieve the embargo. It is said some speculators prefer holding grain in cars to take advantage of an early break- away in congested freight conditions, rather than to unload it and save demurrage. . It is semingly conceded that if wheat could reach the Atlantic it might get a clearance. The fact came to light in different exchanges during the week, that the European countries are not counting on any early peace to supply them with wheat, and they continued buying here,’ taking advantage of the breaks in prices. This helped stop the pressure of the bear traders, and wheat came up accordingly. It is also being freely talked in grain centers that the United States will need “all the wheat it can buy before another harvest, and the bull traders are relying upon this to stimulate the market against any. effort of the bears to break it upon rumors of approaching peace. = LIVESTOCK SUMMARY A continued steady movement of feed- ing cattle from the South St. Paul stock- yards to. the .country, very largely to for finishing. | Nt Bl g e e o 4 90000 000000000000000000000000 On' the better grades of not been getting as much of the high grade Peef as they wished: Shipments to the country ranged from : 26 to 44 carloads a day, mostly of cattle, but including also a few carloads of sheep and hogs. The late arrivals of many stock trains, due to bad weather conditions, gave the appearance of drag- ging to the market on several days. In springers and-in milkers there was Iittle demand, but a few cows with ca.lyes were disposed of daily at prices ranging around $70 to $80. . In sheep and lambs all the exchanges of the country are firm markets, and best lambs sold at $12.25. WHEAT FUTURES- MINNEAPOLIS May July Date Hi Low.
