The United States civ\il service com- mission announces examinations for No- vember 7 and 8 to secure men to fill six positions in the United States depart- ment of agriculture. The positions have to do with the enforcement of the new grain standards act and ought to inter- est North Dakota grain men with ex- perience sufficient to enable them to pass the examinations. 'Three of the posi- tions will pay from $1800 to $2400 per year and three from $1200 to $1800. “Under the grain standards act re- cently passed and under laws likely to be passed in the future,” says Congress- man George M. Young, “I think it is very important that we get some men from "North Dakota connected up with the U. S. bureau of markets. There are too many of them in there now from Minne- sota.” Congressman Young hopes that a -large number of North Dakota men elig- ible for these six positions will take the examinations. The ' examination for November 7 is for assistant in market- ing, paying $1800 to $2400 per year, whose duties will be %o conduct investig-" ations of the marketing of grain, seed and hay at country points and central markets; to study the methods used in the handling and distribution of these products, and the construction, equip- ment and location of elevators; and to _assist the producers and the trade in marketing these.products with the least possible amount of loss. In the examin- ation, education will count for 80 points, practical experience and fittness for 40 points and thesis on a practical subject connected with the work 30 points. The examinations November 8 are to obtain assistants in marketing, grade 2, at salaries of $1200. to $1800 per year. The duties of those who get the jobs will be to assist in the investigations of the marketing of grain, seed and hay; and the handling of these products while in transit, and in work along these lines to be carried on in cooperation with agri- cultural colleges and experiment sta- tions. In this examination answers to practical questions will count. 40 points; thesis on some subject in connection with the work, 25 points; education and ex- perience, 35 points. ) Persons in North Dakota desiring to take these examination should write to the secretary of the United States Civil * Service board at St. Paul, Minn., for blanks, place of examination and other data wanted. Anyone who is a citizen of the United States can take the exam- - ‘inations. CORN ADVERTISES NORTH DA KOTA : North Dakota is getting some valuable advertising from its corn crop and the efforts that are being made to induce. the farmers to take special care of this crop this year. A number of comments have been noticed in papers published further east concerning the success that N. D, is having with corn. ' The Superior Telegram is using the _ North Dakota corn crop as an argument to induce the farmers of Northern Wis- consin to go into corn raising more ex- tensively. : > This may not seem important but it is. North Dakota could not buy advertising that would do the state so much good without the expenditure of large sums. —FORTUNA LEADER. ; “ DR. J. W. CAMPBELL, SPECIALIST .
