Ruilroads La Moure Codntjy is Job of “Equalzzmg” FFICIAL figures are now avail- O able in LaMoure county to show the ' comparative . increases in taxes on railroads and farm lands as equalized at the last tax making of the state board of equalization. The Leader has printed a series of articles on th:ls subject, showing conditions in various townships. The state board of equahzatxon wanted- to increase the total tax revenue 20 per cent and could not raise the state tax levy, which is fixed at four mills in the constitution. So th only thing to do was to increase ~ the property valuations so” that the same levy would raise a greater tax. This' the board did. The result was that every kind of property in thé state except farm lands will pay the Same: or less proportion of the total - tax, but farm lands will pay a great B;‘oportmnal increase. NOTE ACTUAL FIGURES The wa.y this works out in the town- sl'ups is striking. Twenty _townships of LaMoure county are given here- with, with the railroad and real estate tax for the years 1914 and 1915. In these 20 townships railroads were in- creased only 29 per cent, while real estate, practically all farm lands, was mcreased 36 per cent. Nora townsh:p is “typical of what happened in the other 19 for which figures are given. Railroad valuations in Nora were in- creased only about $26,000, while real estate in this township was increased over $45,000.
