The Leader solicits advertisements’ of meritorious articles needed a!:iy Farmers. Qusdck, fraudulent and irresponsible firms-are not knowingly ad- vertised, and we will take it as a favor if any readers will advise us promptly ghould they have occasion to doubt. or question the reliability of any which patronizes our. advertising columns, Discriminating advertisers recognize the ‘Nonpartisan Leader. as the best medium in the state of North Dakota through which to reach the wideawake and up-to-date farmers. 5 ; » WiE s, HELP OUT THE--EDITOR. 2 ; The editors and publishers’of the Leader are glad to get suggestions from members of the League and readers of- the Leader as to the form of the publication and the matters’ they:like to:see in print. The editor got & lettey‘last week from one of the readers who wantéd to see the old first-page heading back again, Here it is on:this issue. - We don’t promise to adhere to this form, but we like to please and we have an idea that a little variety in some things may please a large number. "We appreciate words of criticism as well as of praise. . We have had Witich of ‘the latter, which encourages us in the hope that we are working along right: lines, but we are always ready to listen to suggestions as well as to friendly criticism. SOMETHING ABOUT ADVERTISING, Because the Leader has printed advertising from mail-order houses the charge has been made by lmgriendly persons that the Leader doesn’t believe: in home industry and that it seeks to encourage buying outside the ‘state. : Nothing could be more ridiculous. The Leader accepts advertising from re- putable firms who are willing to pay for the space. It all helps to get out . a better paper and we are anxious to make YOUR PAPER the best it can be 5 made. . The Leader exercises supervision over its advertising. It is not willing to accept the advertisements of swindlers and it insists that its advertisements shall be truthful. Further than that it cannot go. For.instance, in the liné of political advertising it accepts paid advertisements from candidates for various office. Readers of the Leader no doubt understand—they should understand clearly—that the Leader does not necessarily indorse the candidacy of candi- dates whose paid announcements are glrmted in the page set aside ‘for that % ose. THE LEADER INDORSES NO CANDIDATE FOR OFFICE WHO AS NOT BEEN INDORSED BY THE LEAGUE, EVEN THOUGH THE CANDIDATE MAY BE A MEMBER OF.THE LEAGUE. Readers should draw a sharp distinction between paid advertising and editorial expression, LEADER ADVERTISING GETS RESULTS. s The "business manager 'continues to get: the most fratifying evidence of large returns from space in the Lead the Leader. He driftéd on in his conversation and mentioned "the convention: at Fargo, and was trying to tell the audience how the steam roller worked, how the speakers denounced Burdick, Smith,Hanna and others, and he also carried a’Grand Forks.Herald with him, so I step- ped up-to him and asked himrwhether or not he was at the convention. * < He said “no.” ThenI told him that he did not know what he was talking about. He said he had proof and that he had seen the Herald. ' I told him how the Herald regarded the farmers, advising them on the sun- shine and rain proposition. T R - : Now this fellow wants to get-a League,"membershig card so that he can use it, making people believe he is on the inside track. He said he in- dorsed Hanna for U. S. senator and the rest of the gang. X I write this by request of the rest of the League members present. J. M. REINER.
