HARRIS Wheaton Has “Something New” § Community House, Only One of Its Kind, ¥y " Community House ‘Wheaton, Minnesota, has something new under the sun. k is a “commun- ity building.” It is said to be the only ohe of its kind in the world. That takes in a lot of territory, but: it is said to be true. The community buildin$ ton is a part of the already well equipped public school system. It serves as a common gathering. place for not only the present but the future In this build- ing not only may fathers and mothers gather for rest and recreation, but boys and girls may engage in amuse- ments, physical culture, gymnastic exercises and ‘social affairs. The influences arising from. this mingling ‘'of people in this edifice can- not other than uplifting and help- ful. It is the last step in centralizing and uniting with ties of mutual inter- est an entire community in-its educa- .- tional and social affairs and establish- ing among the people thereof a better. understanding ' of their duty toward each other in public affairs and busi- ness relations. v FOR COMFORT AND ENJOYMENT The building is a three-story brick and is of beautiful architectural. design. On the ground floor ‘is an auditorium - and gymnasium, a girls’ locker and shower bath, a storage room, boys’ locker and shower bath and a farm bureau room. B The second floor has a large aud- itorium 58x70 with 800 seats. There is also a stage with dressing rooms, - ticket office, toilet, library. and women’s rest room and agricultural ' department.- ‘In the top floor there is a manual training room, conservatory, cooking room, sewing room, girls’ toilet, commercial department and- writing room. 3 The present community building is . the logical outcome of a custom long. in vogue at Wheaton. For a number ‘Baby Week LesSo'ns “What’s the use of sending a girl to college? - She’ll just go and get married,” is the overwhelming argu- ment which has “squelched” the am- bition of many:a young girl for higl, xer education. .. - : Her only answer is either to deny her natural maternal instincts or to prove to a practical father the actual value of cultural training to a wife and mother. "This impossible task is no longer necessary for girls of North Dakota. Theéy may now answer, “Yes 1 shall ‘probably marry and give my life work to the service of my home. I am entitledto be trained for a suc- cessful home-maker.” = : . er. o t they are doing at the Agriculty college, giving the practical training that will fit ‘young people for lifé’work. ; 3 o o Fhiro n, Dy Week rogram of ‘the ; of ¢ ‘Home ‘Economits deparhfi%t,gave'a( ‘demonstration on.“Baby’s Food and - Clothing”, and Miss Heidner, a senior girl, presided with the assurance giv- - en by accurate and scientific know . edgeand the poise of a cultured mi For Rest, Gatherings and Entertainment at Whea- - of the “Baby Week” - of Florence Ni - cently umveiled ‘in St. Paul’s Cathed- at Wheaton, Minnesbtu of years it has been the practice to bring into the Wheaton high school each Friday as many pupils from' the ten rural schools surrounding and as- sociated with the high school as cared to come. There they were given in- stmction tusl ge mbt.ao’“sed in(l!.ylstnal epartments; they obtained glimpses of modern, usegfl education; they became acquainted . with the town pupils and thus a spirit of community interests was born. 5 In addition to this the community interests were further advanced by the practice of the high school teach- ers of holding night school one night in each week. To these sessions everybody was invited. ~The response to these invitations was flattering. A little program followed the school course, and every class-had a large attendance. SR ; : The building is located ‘near the center of town, constructed of brick and is 60x130 feet. - : . REST FOR SHOPPERS " The'library and rest room is one ‘of the novel features of ‘the building. Connected with the library it will offer. an irresistible invitation ‘to farmers” wives visitihg and shopping in town. The books are neatly cased around the walls of the room and the center - is occt:lpied with writing tables, rock- ers and comfortable chairs. ' It has its private lavatory and closet, and loung- . es are provided for those who wish to lie down. A matron is in charge and it is believed the women’s rest room will- prove one of the most: popular -departments of the building. - is community building is-one of the first advanced steps taken in the realization of a great movement that is now awakening the people of the United States—that of furthering the communitf spirit. That the move- ment will grow and advance there seems little room for doubt. . = " IN WOMAN'S WORLD 0. - The resolution providing that Can- adian women should be allow&d: to vote at federal elections in any prov- ince where they could vote at provin- cial elections' was defeated in the house of commons February 28. : ‘Dt_)wa‘ger Queen Elizabeth ‘of Rou- ' mania, (Carmen Sylva) who died March 2 at the of 78 years, was practically ‘the only royal wonfan of recent years to achieve fame as a poet. Hers was:a life of unusual in- terest, She was an indefatigable worker and a great philanthropist. “To women has ever fallen the task of alleyiating the suffering and.dis- ‘tress-caused by forces over which they "movs: mrol% ‘and ptlarha S thy m ficent ‘example of self-sacrificing devotion wl;s the - nurse. “A memorial to her ‘was ral 1 London by Queen Mary on behalf of English womanhood.
