But seeing that-the farm- ers were in need of legislation to pro- tect and’build up their industry the Grange endorsed the Greenback party. This crippled the Grange and since then it has not been able to regain its strength. Then about ten years later the Farmers’ Alliance was organized. The Alliance developed into a powerful organization and succeeded in passing legislation in many states for the benefit of the farmer. It also elected several members of congress and some senators. But in 1892 the Alliance ondorsed the Peoples’ party. This killed the Alliance the same as the Greenbackers killed the Grange and their bodies now lie mouldering in the grave, but their spirits go marching on. It has taken new life in the Nonpartisan League. It is imperative that ‘we protect it from the fate of the Grange and the Alliance. Dak. Likes Hellstrom Article Nonpartisan Leader I am much interested in the Nonpartisan League and am one of the first “Six Dollar Rubes” in this part of Stutsman county. I am well pleased with the progress of the League and the suc- cess of the meetings being conducted over the state. I have read with interest the ar- ticle by F. O. Hellstrom in a recent number of the Leader on_state grad- ing of grain. I believe that every member of the League will agree with Mr. Hellstrom that his estimate of the loss to North Dakota farmers on grading and dockage of grain is not toc high. We all know that most of our wheat is undergraded at least one grade and is surely given a full dose of dockage. While I believe it will ‘help a lot to have a state in-' spection of grain, yet it will be nec- essary to ‘have federal grain inspec- tion before we get absolute justice— federal inspection based upon a uni- form inspection law. Now, brother farmers, while you, are thinking of the tremendous ioss sustained by North Dakota farmers, just expand your imagination a little further and figure, if you can, the loss-in price occasioned through man- ipulations of the speculators and grain gamblers who reduced the price on grain when we were forced to sell. Such injustices, in my judgment, can only be avoided by state owned and controlled terminals, where our grain could be stored at actual cost and also by the state or the federal government loaning money to farm- ers on such stored grain at reasonable rates. Of all the good laws suggested by members of the League I think these two the most important. For I believe if we had such laws in effect we would have taken the power from the price meanipulators to reduce the price of our grain when we thresh, for -if they reduced it too much we would not sell.
