O e READING FOR BOYS. Gardening for Profit, by PETER HENDERSON, South Bergen, N.J., would probably not be sclected by most Dboys as the book for their money, wherein they would evince their usual greenness, There are marvels of trans- formation and rapid production recorded therein which snight well shame the duil fancy of the author of Aladdin or of Kaloclah. To krow that afew roods of good land may well employ and will sure 1y reward the constant libor of & stont man—that there are choice goldfields all around us for those who know how to dig—that $1,000 may ‘e wisely and profitably expended in draivivg, subsoil- ng, tertilizing, and deeply pulverizing agingle acre—that e who would get rich by gardenivg wust pile on manures by the hundreds of tuns—that great crops always pay: half crops never—such are a few of the inportant truths succinctly set forth and tersely enforced in Mr. Hender- ‘@on's little voluwe. There is no theory about it—an old man, | ‘who has made himeelf rich by market dening, plaivly sells our young men how they can get vich as easily as he did, and without wandering to ifornia or Montana for B elther. (0. Judd & Co,, 41 Park-row.) The American Agricultural Annual for 1867 is an | exceedingly neat synopsis, or miniature cyclopedia, of the muost important principles wlich underlie and the newest truths that have advanced the business of Farming. Tile-Drainivg, by Geo. E. Waring; Recent Progress in Agricultural Science, by Prof. 8. W. Johrson; American Barus, by Dr. F. M. Hexamer; Barley and Wheat, by Joseph Harris; Sorghum, by Wm. Clough; Potatoes, by Wm. 8. Carpenter; Eheep, by John Johnston; Poultry, ®y 8. M. Baunders; Bees, by Bidwell Brothers, are some of the more important essays in this annual; bat there are hundreds of shorter articies, including brief re- minders of the work proper to each month, which of themselves are worth the half-dollar charged for the whole. Col. Waring’s treatise on draining is amodel of Iucid exposition, and the abundant illustrations of this as of the other essays are admirably executed. Mr. Judd is making bis establishment a geveral blessing by the issue of such works as this, in counteraction of the current tend- eney to brokerage, kite-flying, and gold-gambling; and | wo hope ke may reap a rich reward. Half a million oopies of these two little works, placed iu the hands of our country’s boys, would save thousands of them from prison and poor-hiouse, and add willions to the Natioual | 3 ‘Wealth. st in ite ) fash- largely in the mode New !)nbliumcm. *HREE NEW BOOKS, IN A FEW DAYS.
