Tobacew at 18, There is & steady conversion of 7.30s into 5208 of the July and Janvary issues, but the amount is altogether out of preportion to the neeessity which exiats for grtting t troublesoie debt out of the way prior 1o the resumption of spocie poyments, which eaunot be safely sttempted until they wre put inte long gold-tearing bonds. This cluss of debt was put mpon tho country by the mistakee (ealled at the time the mocess ties) of the Treawry De- partment, and forced into every toan and village by the wost claborate system of advertising and commendation ever bestowed upon 8 loan, backed, too, by commissions that secured tho services of every broker und bavker throughiout the eountry. Sustained mow by $700,000,000 of irredeernable duc-bills in the form of legal tenders nd Natioual Bank notes, popularly ealled money, they command, in comnion with the bonds into whieh they are convertible, & premium in currency, and. into these ut waturnity in 1867 and 1865 they will inevitably fund them- scives, loaviug the Treasury 10 fund or pay in tho iuterval the compound note, $155,000,000, and some part of the $100,000,000 of legal tenders, and drift to where specie payments can be resumed. But the interest of the coun- try demands that Congress end the Treasry should do semcthing more than drift to specie; they must boldly steer the finances back to the gold standard, and by the most emergetic means bring the legal tender money up to gold. This ean be done effectually by resorting to the weaus by which the 7.30s are sold, and by paying to any one who will surrender them for 5208 s commission as large as brokers mukein turn ing over Railway sbares, State stocks, or Mining sbares, even. The commissions for this servioe would amount to s good round sum, but it would be paid for a labor as valuable to the nation as the last decisive victories won by the Union armies to end the Rebellion. The sooner Cougress gives the Secretary the power to pay larger commissions, and makes It imperstive upon bim to open them to the publie the better. Mining shares are sttracting more attention, and higher prices have been paid. La Crosse Gold yose 80 cente per share; Corydon 20 ‘cents, and was in demand.
