The Bonds have Thirty Years to run, and are secured by a Pirst Mortgage, constituting an absolute prior lien on that portion of the Road, Equipments, Franchises, and Entire Property of the Central Pacific Railroad Company, located in the State of California, and ex- tending from Sacramento City to the California State Line, forming a part of the GREAT PACIFIC RAILEOAD Routk, adopted and aided by the USITED STATES GOVERNMENT. The amount of these First Mortgage Bonds to be issued per mile is limited by law to the amount of Uuited States Bonds allowed and issued to sid the coustruction of the Road, sud the Mortgage by which they are secured is declared by Act of Congress to constitute aplien prior and superior (o that of the United States Government, The aid received from the Goversment (in smount equal to this First Mortgage) is economically and judi- ciously applied to the construction and equipwent of the Rosd, together with nearly $7,000,000 received from Stock Subscriptions and other sources. The First Mortgage therefore amounts to but about 35 per cent of the sctual cost and value of the Property which it covers. The road is now completed, equipped and running from Sacramento City to Alta, s distance of 73 miles, and the earnings for the (hree months ending Avgust st wero as follows, viz: May, 1866. $05,115 &3 June, 1866, 7,42 18 July, 1866. .. 83,000 00 IN GOLD. The earnings are steadily increasing, and are estimated st over $100,000 in gold for the mouth of August—the offi- cial report for that wonth not having been roceived at this date. The construction of the road Jis going vigorously for- ward,—24 miles additional being nearly ready for the cars,— and it will probably oo in full operstion to the California State line—156 miles from Sacrawmento City—duzing the Summer of 1867, when its earniags must bo very large, a8 the entire trade of Novada, and a large proportion of that of Utah, I1daho, and Montaus must pass over ita Yoe. It hes been shown by reliable statistics that in &5 rdver $13,000,000 in gold was paid for freighting goods fri, re fornia to Nevada alone. b This part of the Great Pacific Railroad route is destined to be one of the most profitable lines of reilroad in the world, and its First Mortgage bonds are among the best secured and most desirable investments ever offered, Over $1,000,000 Lias already been expended in grading beyond the point to which the rosd is now running, snd the iron is bought and paid for suflicient to lay the tack the entire distance to the State Line., AN The Rosd has been completed and equipped thus far without the sale of a single dollar of its First Mortgage Bonds, and they are pow offered to the public for the first fime, after the earnings of the road bhave reached the sum of $100,000 per month, in gold, only about 25 per cent of which is required for operating expenses. fow professional operators, who reason that as long as the drain for customs continue, and the market is not re- lieved by sales from the Tresury, or by the prepayment of the November interest, the preminm cannot be ma- terially reduced, The Department has snother mode by which it can deprive the gamblers of their steadiest source of profit—the purchaser for customs duties. It has only to sonounco that it will meke daily & price at which cer- tificates redeemable at the Custom-House for duties will be sold, and thé g buls would come to griof. It would at once cul off their revenue from loaning gold and force them to carry their own prop- erty instesd of baving it carried. The daily withdrawal of $750,000 legal tonder money of National Bank notes snd even from the Banks, in addition to the present drain, would soon tell upon the money market and make gold specula- tions much less profitable, and consequently unpopular.
