Bpecial Dispatch to The N. Y. Tribone. $4co, Me., Thursday, Jely 5, 1600, 1 havo just returned from the City of Portland, where I have witncssed tho most terrible conflagration ever inflict- ed ona city in Now-England. Nearly one-half the terri- Sory had been burnod over since 5 o'clock yesterday p. m. *Tho fire broke out in a boat-buildiag shop, just above Brown's sugar-house, the wind blowing a gale and contin- ming for 12 hours, burning over a mile in length and from ene-fourth to one-half mile in width. Brown's sugar- Jouses are all in nshes. The firo burned in @ north-easterly direction to Ex- cbenge and Middle-sts., thence to Congress and Cumber- Jand-sts., thence down through the town to the Grand Trunk Railway station. All of Middle and Exchange-sts. are in ruins, and all of Congress-st., from the Uhited ‘States Hotel to the Munjoy Hill. All the banks, being the Casco Canal, Merchauts, Traders, Cumberland, and First sud Second National, are down. All the newspaper of- Sices, viz.: The Press, Advertiser, Argus, and Star, are $n ruine. The Post-Office and Custom House is ruiued, though it is thought the records are safe in the vaults. The American, Commercial, and International House, sud Wood's Marble Hotel are burned. Eight churches and the new city buildiog are destroyed. The Natural History Rooms are gone. Two thousand families in the heart of the city are turned out of tho city by the fire, and some $10,000,000 of property destroyed. Allof the business portion of the city except Lowuwercial-st. is burned over. I send from here, as th ‘wires were not up when I left Portland at uine this morn- ing. The firo was still raging when 1 left, though it was thought to be under control. Help was had from Saco, ‘Piddeford, Bath, Gardiner, and Lewistown. To Tho Awsociated Press. PARTICULARS OF THE FIRE—FIFTY BUILDINGS BLOWN UP--HALF THE CITY DESTROYED. PORTLAND, Me,, Thursday, July 5, 1856, The fire has completely swept through the city, from the foot of High-st. to North-st., on Munjoy, destroying everything in its track so completely that the lines of the streets can hardly be traced, and a spgee of one and a half miles long by a quarter of a mile wide appears like a forest @f chimueys, with fragments of walls attached to them, ‘The wind was blowing a gale from the south, end a tremendous sheet of flame swept along before it, devour- jug everything in its passage, and the utmost exertions of the firemep, aided by a steamer and hand engines from poveral other places, could ouly succeed in preventing it from spreadiog in vew directions. + Many buildings, perhaps 50, were blown up to check $heflames; but the inhabitants could scarcely do more than flee with their families to the upper part of the city, maving such goods as they could carry, though every vehicle 3n the city was employed with excellent effect in moving goods. The Custom-House, being fire-proof, escaped, though greatly damaged. The cowrt records in the upper story sre probably destroyed. ‘The eplendid city and country building on Congressst., ‘which was nearly fire-proof, was considered safe, and it ‘was piled full of furniture by the peighboring residents, aod then it was swept away with all its contents, Half the city is destroyed, and that half includes nearly all the business portion, excepting the heavy business in Commercial-st. = ‘The fire commenced a little below the foot of High-st., in # boat-shop. It next burnt Upham's flouring mill, and then Brown's sugar-house with all its surroundings; the Staples & Son’s and Richardson's foundenes, and nothing else on Commercial-st. of consequence. It vext swept what is called Graham's corner, composed of small wooden buildings, clean. It then burned up as faras the old Varnum House, on Pleasant-st., one-third the way up Centre-st., half the way up Colton-st., com- Ppletely up Cross-st., Uniozn-st., Tomple-st. and Exehnnge-st. It swept down on the northerly side of Fire-st. to India- L., on the east, while on the west it moved along diagon slly across Middle-st., and down to Cumberland, takivg , but sparing the first Parish Church. Chestuut-st. to Northest. it made o clean the southerly side of Cumberland-st., snd the the case with Congress-st., and everytLing elee Lo Firest., os far est as Iudiest. All the bauks are goue. Al the newepaper ofliges are burned. But three printing offices are left. All the jewelry establishments, all the wholesale dry- | goods stores, several churches, the telegraph oflices, nearly tamne and the - stationery swavzj —me s wayonty of the business are destroyed. “ J-“fflf' g, s The fige is still T4ZIBK "jow Cumberland-st., making back to the westwhsd, the wind having changed. Capt. Inman kas telegraphed for 1,500 tents to accom- modate the homeless inhabitants, It is almost impossible to tell where the people lived, the ruin and destruction is so complcte, Davis, Baxter & Co., on Frie-st., wholesale dealers in fancy articles, set down their loss at $25,000, which is fully Insured in the Etna Co., Hartford, and the Hampden Co., Bpringhicld. ‘The upper side of Fore-st. is swept clean to Indis, ex- ®ept two buildings on the corner of India-st. Wood's Marble Hotel, the Freeman House, the American Houge, the Eln Bouse, the Iuternational House, the Commer- pial House, the Stupdevant House, sud Kingsbury's “Hotel are all destroyed. Congress-st., from Chestuut-st. to the Observatory, is sleaned on both sides. Not a building is standing on Ex- ebange-st. Federal-st. is entirely destroyed, as is Cum- serland-st. from Pearl-st. to the hill, on both sides. Uuion, Plum, Temple, Lime and Silver-sts. are entirely sleancd, and Franklin, from Fore to Oxford. Al of de wholesale, and most of the retail shoe stores are Bestroyed. A steam and haud-engine came in from Saco, and hand- sngines from Biddeford, Gardiner, Brouswick and Hallo- well. “The following is an approximate list of the losses and fusurance: Charles Staples & Son, machinists, loss €40,000; ineured for $12,000 in the * Home,” New York, and a Boston Company. It is estimated that about 2,000 buildings are bumed, and property destroyed to the amount of $10,000,000, which is probably iusured about half. The State valuation was $28,000,000, and the real valua- tion must be over 30,000,000, Fully one-third must bave been destroyed. Nothing can be done in the city to-day except to take care of the homeless, and that is actively being done. Everybody's “ lateh-string Langs out,” and a cheerfal and buoyant feeling prevails. Tlhere was no confusion or struggle during the fire. Every one was courteous and | kind, and ®) worked carnestly together. The firemen from abroad worked nobly and assisted greatly in saving property. The churehes and many other edifices are thrown open for the homeless, and committoes are appointed to relieve the distressed. For some hours during the conflagration eommunication was cut off between the front and back of the city except by over a wile journey around. ‘I'he Lowell Bage Ball Club of Bogton rendered gallant assistance in saving property. There is not a power-press left in the city to strike off a paper upon. At the present writing (afternoon) the flames are siill troublesome in gome quarters, and are working down iuto the Custom- House badly. Almost all the hose in the city bas been burst, and some engines used np. The loss of John B, Brown & Sons must be at least $1,000,000; they owning & large amount of real estate in every quarter of the city; they are insured for about one- Lalf the value, —— Helief for the Suflerers by the Fire.
