LT 2 NEW PUSLICATIONS. i THE ENGLISH LAN- THE RAREST BOOKS 1 GUAC TICAL Accm'm' OF THE { THE_ENGLISH LANGUAGE, Avry WHIOH DT 1XG THE LAST PIFTY YEARS onsvs TIoN 07 I ¥AYER Corinm. F: vo. pp. I, 395, 31l k. Devid 6. ¥rascis The lovers of old L nglish 1i have reason to coa- ratulate thems: that the reprinting of the most valua blo contribugion to bibliographical knowledge which has been given to our language for many years, has beca un- dertaken by a publisher who has a genuine apprecistion of the remarkable t of tho book, and the good taste and Liberality to clotho it in a garb appropriste to its subject and worthy of it in poiut of elsgance, neatncss and ac- euracy. The mochanical execution of the four handsome volumes for which wo areindcbted to Mr. Francis is almost #nough, irrespective of the litorary and historical merit of MMr. Collier’s work, to tempt anybody to buy them. Wo have not secn the English odition, but it is said to be far Snferior to the American one, aad we are glad to perceive that Mr. Collier Las made a handsome acknowledgment of Mr. Fraucis's enterprise. Onb of the chiof merits of Mr. Collier's hook is that it is supplementary to all othor bibliographical manuals. Many of the articles describe productions altorother unknown to other investigators, books of uju.h only a single copy {s known to b in existeuce, or separato tracts of tho ut- most rarity. A very fow more common but still’soarce publications will bo found interspersed, a circumstance arising from tho fact that the author has incorporated in his four volumes the whole of the *Bridgewater Cata- logne,” drawn up by him about 30 years ago for the first Farl of Ellesmere, and privately printed it tho expense of that nobleman. Dut excopt for the sake of illustration or the correction of some important error, Mr. Collier never eriticizos & volume which has passed through the hands of any previous bibliographer. And what is of great import- ance, he discusses the merits and peculiaritics of no book which has not been carefully reed by his own eyes. His work is by no meaus a bare catalogue, nor is it morely what it professis to be in its tide-pago—a biblio- graphy. With all nocdful information respecting the date, suthorship, &c, of every publication that he de- seribes, he farvishes a satisfictory, and in many casesa very entertaining account of its subjoct matter and style, with abundant extracts by way of specimens. Ho gives s stanzas and whole poems which were excluded by the suthors from the sccoud improssions of their works, and bave not found their way back into any subscquent editions. Fle enalles us to correct many important and curious errors which have been universally curreat in modern reprints of ancient writers, end he points out some mistakes even as to the authorship of certain pro- @uetions. While his labors must prove of immeuse value to thoe bibliographer, they are certain at tho samo time to Do scceptable to the antiquary and the student of Liter ature. As 8 sample of theso strango bits of mhnm(‘m which 'liy by found scattered through tiese pages, we copy an extract respecting women's dress from “A Godly and Prof- ftable Treatise, intituled, Absolom, his Fall, or the Ruin of Roysters,” &e., 6 black letter of the 16th Century. Wasmisoron MB\;{I. " e u""'"g..u'y"" of Litoratare. Fourth Fditioa: Yoo i 18% Aligaoder Sirsias. In this -plnud Jittlo volume Dean Alford, whoso criti- cisms on certain common vices of style and expression wore noticed at somo length in TEE*TRIBUNE & month or two ago, is fairly convicted of numorous gross violations of tho rules of Engluh composition. Butitmay be doubted whether it was"worth while to expen! so much ink aad popor in showing that Dr. Alford, liko a guide-bonsd, points out the right way, without walking in it himself.: There are very few points in whick Mr. Moon disputes the Dean's principlos; his quarrel is rather with the very roverend eritic's practico. Ho disseots his advorsary’s scntonces with a savage hilarity which suggests tho sealp- ing-knifo rather than the scalpel, and holds up the gory romains more as trophies of victory than as dreadful ex- amples to be avoided. It must be admitted that his ob- ections are generally woll taken; but thero are ono or two instances im which he is certainly unfuir. Ife quotes tho following passage of the Doan's: “ While treating of the pronunciation of those who winister in public, two other words ocour to mo which are vory cormmonly mangled by our clorgy. Oneof these [a] is ‘covetous,’ and its eub- stantive ‘ covetousness' I hope some who n«'\d these lines will be induced to leave off pronouncing them [J] ‘cove- tious, and ‘covetiousuess.' I can assure them [c] that when they [d] do thus call fiem <], ono at least of their [f] hearers has bis appreciation of their [2] to aching dis- turbed.” M. Moon remarks that this extract may bo read in 10,240 difforent ways. Tho first these” [a] may apply to “words,” or “clergy;"” “them" [] to ““words,” © clorgy,” ¢ readors,” or “linos,” and so on. Ifr. Dean's sentences are cortainly bad onough, but not 5 bades Mr. Moon ropresents thom to be, Tho word *them” [1] cannot by strotch of syntax be referred to ¢ read rs,” and tho climination of this single from Mr. Moon's inge- nious sum in multiplication makes, in the total result, & difference of no fewer than 4,005 readings. Again, Mr. Moon finds fault with the Dean for saying that L clu\s noticed in Shakespeare “ the word party uscd for an indi vidual” How is it,” asks Mr. Moon, * that you call & man an éndividual 7" Tho use of ¢ indivilual” hereis strictly correct : Dr. Alford wished to deaoto one por- son as distinguished from a body of men, and * individu- &l is precisely the word he ought to have employed. Mr. Moon's book, offensive’as it is in tone, may serve a useful purposs by warning us against carelessnoss in the arrangement of words, ns well s st some mora so- rious faults of which the Dean is proved to have been guilty ; but it willdo 1:ss sarvice than the little cssay which it s0 savagely aseails, bocauss it is strictly personal in its eharacter, whilo tho latter aims to correct the com-r mon vices of speech and writing which pervade society.
