NEW-YORK DAILY TRIBUNE, TUESDAY, JUNE 19, 1866., NEW PUBLICATIONS. s PRACTICAL AMPRICAN MixeR. ‘WORK 0N 0UR MINES AND MUNERAL Kn- 100k O% GUIDE To THEIR EOONOX1OAL s, HARIES DADDO lical Miner d BENJAMIN BANNAN, Joumnal.’ @vo. pp. 806. Pottsville: Dea- coAl.}llloll AND OIL; LAY AYD Forvian min Banven. The grester part of this bulky volume is of a practical character. It doscribes our great mineral fields and the | pmeusup(rr-mm followed in the extraction of ores; contains a complote system of mine-surveying; treats uf the various modes of ventilating mines, with the impro monts lately effectod or attempted; gives abundant statis- | tics; and supplies a great deal of veluable information mpecdng perticular mines and mining rogions. The suthors dovote, however, a pretty large space to theoretis cal discussions and scientific geology, nd broach several new propositions which will doubtless attract notice. They | assert that the material forming both the azoie and palwo- goic formations of the easth are almost exclusively and di- rectly from volcanic sources; that voleanic and subterra- nean heat produced the vapors or gases which resulted in petroleum, naphtha &e.; and that the hydrocarbons, in the shape of naphtha, petroleum, and their resulting bitamen, formed mineral coa!. The book is abundantly illustrated with maps, diagrams and woodcuts, C—— P. O'Shea has just published the third volume of the American translation of Darras’s *“ General History of the Catholic Church from the Commencement of the Chris- tian Era until the Present Time.” The work in its origi- pal langusge enjoys & high reputation among European Catholics, and the translation appears to have been i.ado by 8 competent hand. The Abbé Darras wrote rather for the general public than for scholars; his style is popular and readable; and he spends comparatively little time over the discussion of controverled points of history. ‘The archbishop of Baltimore, Dr. Spalding, has added an introduction and notes which will materielly increase the value of the book; and the printer and binder have performed their respective tasks with excellent taste and liberality. The present volume brings the namative down 1o the reformation in the 16th century. PR R William B. Bradbury has published a new edition of bis popular Sunday School Hymn Book, “The Golden Ohain,” containing all the words and music of the old one, with about onme-third more matter. By the use of a dif- ferent sort of type a change of paging has been avoided, 80 that the new edition can be used in connection with the New Dublications.
