8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Active and Feverish. Government Bonds Quiet, States Weak and Railroads Irregular. Money on Call Active at 3a7a 6 Per Cent.” pee Watt Srneer, } Tvrspay, March 18—6 P. M. As was foreshadowed in this column some days back, the stock market has fallen into a state of somnolency that neither the efforts of bulls nor Dears can force into a lasting activity, To-day prices were steady at the opening, vacillating atnoon and altogether weak at the end. The market presents itself as a sort of “tabula rasa’’ upon which either bull or bear is at liberty to write his name, but upon which neither bull nor bear ventures to inscribe himseif under the uncertainty that prevails as to the future of prices. Consequently, with both factions ata deadlock, as it were, and doubtful as to whether the time coming is to be a good one or a bad one, the market may be left to care for itself atter the moderately active somi-quiescent and altogether undemonstrative fashion which it did, The halt in speculation at the present moment may be traced to the fear of a possible stringency in money rather than to any other cause. An apprehension of & “squeeze,” though it can only be a temporary one, acts like a chloroformed sponge applied to the nose of speculation, rendering business drowsy and sub- jecting the days dealings to the accompaniment of a protracted yawn. Indeed, after this fashion the day dragged on from find to finish, there being nothing to enliven business, either of a social, polit- ical or financial nature. It only remains, therefore, to remark that prices, which were inclined to im- prove during early hours, declined during later ones, the closing figures being between the best and worst of the day. The opening, highest, lowest and closing prices of stocks at the Board to-day were as follows:— Western Union. Pacific Mail. Erie Railway 247 N. ¥.
