FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Fairly Ac- tive and Irregular. Goverment Bonds Weak, States Steady and Railreads Strong. Money on Call 11-2 a6a 8 Per Cent, —-—_—_ Was Street, } ‘Trunspar, Feb. 13—6 P. M. Like the flaneurs who saunter along the boule- varde of Paris without particular aim or object, prices to-day on ‘Change were inclined to a loafing sort of existence, wnich afforded but little induce- ment to speculation upoy the part of either bull or bear. It consequetly happened that values remained Steady and without material change. Financial practitioners (with their Angers upon the pulse of the market) were, inclined to report favorably upon the condition of the patient, and their opinion was borne out by the recovery which, in the later part of the day, marked most of the active stocks. Taken for all in all, the market was rather bullish than bearish. That Mr. Vanderbilt was a large seller of Lake Shore yesterday is authorita- tively denied, although the theory exists that while he will for the future be content with the con- trolling influence of this road, his main efforts will be directed to the improvement of Michigan Central and Canada Southern, Certainly events pointed this way to-day, for. while Lake Shore hung sluggishly about the pivoting point of 70, the other two stocks advanced nearly 2 per cent. With its immensely watered capital Lake Shore may be regarded as an Old Man of the Sea, which even Mr. Vanderbilt, inthe NEW YORK HERALD, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1879.-TRIPLE SHEKT. ville and Nashville consols of 1898, 3 in C., ©. and L C. firsts, and 34 in Denver and Rio Grande firsts. ‘The closing prices of Philadelphia stocks were:— City sixes, new....- ited lroads of Pennsylvania Railroad Reading Railroad..... A much lighter weight, and from all ap- pearances a much more profitable one, is to be found in his ownership of Michigan Central, which cost him little, and of Canada Southern, which cost him noxt to nothing. It is quite upon the cards, therefore, that Lake Shore “may be left to shift for itself, while the last mentioned properties will be strictly cared for. In this event it would seem to be good judgment to back Michigan Central and Canada Southern in pref- erence to Lake Shore, particularly since the first named stock is expected to be ranked among the eight per cent dividend payers and the latter has little hopes of returning more than six. Jay Gould attempted to spread a wet blanket over the market generally and to tuck it in by squeezing money. Ho was sufficiently successful to advance tho rates at one time to7 per cent, although loans were freely offered at 3 per cent at the close. ‘The last prices of shares were decidedly firmer and the market closed with a noticeable degree of strength.
