FINANGLAL AND COMMERCLL The Stock Market Less Ac- tive and Steady. Government Bonds Quiet, States Higher and Railroads Strong. MONEY ON CALL 1 A 8 A 2 PER CENT. —-——__ Wart Stner, } ‘Torspay, Feb, 11—6 P. M. The description of yesterday's stock market would fairly answer for that of to-day, so much wore they alike in their few leading features. To admit that this morning’s market possessed more body. than a mug of small beer or a cherub on a tombstone is tho best that can be said of it, for it was certainly want- ing in the concomitants necessary toa fully developed bull movement, The grand result of the day's work, however, was to advance prices slightly and to leave them on the brink of buoyancy when business closed+ The coal stocks wero most in favor, the two Dela- wares and New Jersey Central being largely traded in at advancing prices, There were enough of earmarks to show that the Keene-Morgan combination, were holding the best bowers and were only waiting a good opportunity to play them profit- ably, Appearances were that New Jersoy Central was stiffened at one moment to help the Delawares, and the Delawares stiftened at another moment to help the New Jersey Central—a sort of “you tickle me and I'll tickle you”’ arrangement, productive of a titiMating gratification to both parties. To enhance the pleasure it was given out that the various coal companies would advance the price of their product next month from one-half to a dollar per ton. Michigan Central was one of the strong stocks on to- day’s list, We learn from good authority that Mr. Vanderbilt has contracted for the tunneling of the Detroit river opposite Parkersburg, which on completion will admit of the Michigan Central trains reaching the Canada Southern line without the delay and expense of transshipment by ferry, as is the case at present, There is something more doing in Pacific Mail and the price is hardening. Tho company have recently despstched Captain 8. Sam- uels (of Dreadnaught and Henrietta fame) to San Francisco to look after their iiterests on the Pacific coast, and much is expected of his ability to gather up the ravelled ends of a business which, to a great extent, has been left to lie loose, There was nothing to remark in the other active stocks except an un- doubted steadiness which budded into s fractional improvement and a very strong market at the end.
