FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. The Stock Market Fairly Ac- tive and Strong. Government Bonds Quiet, States Lower and Railroads Strong. Money on Call Easy at 1 a 21-2 Per Cent, Want STREET, ‘Tuunspay, Feb. 6—4 P. M. Althongh Lawrence Sterne poetically expressed the {dea (previously stolen from the French, by the way) that the wind was tempered to the shorn lamb, he id not extend his observation to the stock market of the present day, wherein hirsute bears are shorn, elipped and left out in the cold without benefit of clergy. Had he done so he would probably have commiserated the bears had he not sympathized with the bulls, for as matters tend the bulls are get- ting the better of the temperature and the bears the worse. A market. which opened fecbly this morn- ing and with very indifferent reliance upon the spinal marrow of a bull movement, and with no more backbone than that possessed by an oyster, somewhat to the surprise of atreet speculators grew strong, hardened in matter of values, gained in quotative prices. and ultimately tlosed, with a handsome rise, at or about the highest prices of the day. As dealings this morning were utterly free from, the influence of outside rumors tho rise may be ascribed either to the manipulations of a purely brokers’ market or to such latent but |. 459 steady belief in a higher standard of prices as is promised by the better condition of things the country through. There were few signs that the larger operators were indulging themselves in im- portant operations, and consequently the market was left to unimportant traders, who found quotations advance without apparent rhyme or reason. Such, however, was the case, the most material gain being in the grangers, Lake Shore, Michigan Central and Delaware and Lackawanna, With this gain the mar- ket closed firm, strong, unexcited and with all the peace and harmony of a freemason’s lodge. The opening, highest, lowest and closing prices of stocks at the New York Stock Exchange to-day were as follows:— Opening. Highest, Lowest Closing.
