Briefly summarized, the stock market may be de- scribed as having been weak at the opening, steady during the interval and unquestionably strong st Betweon times there occurred a very lively episode, Mr, Gould's pet fancy, Union Pacific, under a sharp attack, was driven from 65 to 5744. The decline was precipitate and unexpected, Casting wbout for reasons of the why and the wherefore, it Was ascertained that parties injured by Gould's “smash” of the Northwesterns yesterday were quite ready to render a quid pro quoby smashing Union Pacific to-day. ‘The endeavor ws puccesstul so far as it went, but it did not go far enough to insure # perfect success, for under the joint support of Messrs, Gould and Sage the price rallied to 6434, and so closed. While Mr. Gould was made to take his own medicine’it was not administered in sufficiently heroic doses to purge him out of the stock market for good and all. This might have been accomplished, however, had the attack been persevered in to a point which would Ihave rendered his money lenders uneasy and a demand for more margins imperative. out the attacking party, popularly supposed to con- sist of Messrs, Keene, Morgan and others of that ilk, became weak kneed and wavering at the moment when pluck and determination were most essential, and the chance of wiping out along continued and notoriously black spot upon the market was lost, Ont of a period of much feverishnoss and uncertainty the market grew into a condition of decided strength soward the close, Although tho future is most prom- ising of higher prices it would seem that sn inter- regnum of irregularity, as expressed by feverish fluctuations, may prevgil for some days to come. ‘The rebuff of the last day or two is not only stag- gering to professional spectators, but has a chilling influence upon the outside public. Besides this there are some items of a financial nature which are not ‘The St. Paul road, it is said, will show a heavy falling off in comparative earnings, the Delaware and Lackawanna annual statement is the reverse of encouraging to stockholders, the Lake Shore road is said to bo $400,000 Behind last year in its January earnings, Western Union Telegraph is threatened by the passage of Senator Jones’ bill en- bling railroad companies to throw open their lines to public business, Union Railroad, panage to the St. Paul road, it is feared, may be un- able to meet the interest to-morrow on its bonds. In the way of the great movement toward higher prices, as necessitated by the better state of things that are awaiting us in the future, these obstacles sre small indeed, but they may be sufficiently im- portant to check the advance for the present, or at least render the market dull and irregular. At the close to-day it was, however, neither ove nor the other, prices being strong and the temper decidedly di ’ 10 Consol Virginia, 100 Dahlonega . ‘The closing quotations for mining stocks As it turned | yrancisco were:— Hale & Norcross. _ Julia Consolidated.
