FINANCIAL AND. COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Very Ac- tive and Strong. Govemment Bonds Firm, States Dull and Railroads Strong. Money on Call Easy at 21-2 a 8 1-2 a 8 Per Cent. —_+—__—_ Wan STREET, Monpay, Jan. 13—6 P. Speculators would be compelled to con over tho history of many past months to discover # more brilliant bull speculation than occurred to-day. From the Alpha to the Omega of the day's business stocks advanced, and those were counted poor indeed which id not gain something upon opening prices. The most particular favorites were Delaware and Lacka- ‘wanna, the Northwesterns and Lake Shore, and about those congregated the great body of speculators. The bears would fain believe that the position of the long interest resembles that of moths hovering about lamps, and that a singeing of wings is an imperative necessity, The bulls regard the advance as 4 warning light hung out to burn, which should light the vilost aiuner who may happen to be short of stocks on his return to the long side of the market, ‘There were many conversions of this sort to-day, and the same created » demand to cover shorts at current prices, and withal invited good deal of realizing upon the part of successful bulls; but neither the buying of the one party nor the selling of the other seemed to affect prices much after midday. From this time onward the market remained steady and strong, with the Northwesterns and Erie closing at the best points of the day and with the rest of the list following close after. The upward burst in the prices of stocks, which proved rather dazzling to the senses of the ordinary stock broker (muddled as he hes been by slong continued dulness), seems to be due first to the fact that the better condition of af- fairs fairly warrants an advance, and second that, almost without exception, the prominent stock Operators, recognizing’ this fact, have ranged them- selves upon the bull side of the market. The opening, highest, lowest and closing prices of stocks at the NewYork Stock Exchange were as a} pra Opening.
