10 THE BLAINE INVESTIGATION. WURTHER TESTIMONY IN REFERENCE TO LOUIS- IANA ELECTION OUTRAGES, New Onveans, Jan. 13, 1819. G. R. M. Newman (colored), Clerk of the District Dourt of St. Mary’s parish, testified concerning the @estruction of ballot boxes and the efforts made by democrats to get possession of the duplicate returns In his possession, and the attack made on his house at night, &c., substantially confirming the newspaper reports published at the time of the occurrence, TWENTY NEGROES KILLED. W. B, McNeal, of Caddo, a deputy sheriff, testified concerning the Caledonia affair, corroborating Nor- wood’s testimony. When they started tor Ream’s house they were fired upon; they were unarmed; witness found a dozen stand of arms at Reams house; witness published the statement to the effect that twenty negroes iu all were killed, but cannot say when and where ‘ach negro was killed; witness served in the federal army during the war, ‘Secretary of State Strong was called and requested to furnish We tion statistics. PEACEABLE POLL IN TENSAS, David Wise, of Tensas, testified that the election was peaceable and quiet; live within a quarter of u mile of Fairtax, but knew nothing until the affair was over; did not see the men; never heard the reason ot their visit: my gin was burned by negroes on Tues- day following font know the reason; never gave them any cause; saw armed colored men marching through Waterproof the day before my gin was burned; consequently when it was burning I was atraid tog» out to see about it; I think the armed Lodies of negroes came from Catahoula parish; there were some two hundred of them; next day another crowd of armed 1 came into town, mide a great deal of fuss and cried that they were going to burn the town; Fairfax was the leader of the negroes; it was understood he was keeping up the color line, making speeches and advising the negroes to preserve a bold front; I soid ammunition at my store to any one who wanted it; the negroes did not buy an un- usual quantity at this time. WHITES BADLY FRIGHTENED. H. Moss, of Tensas, testified that he gave the negroes assurances that the Waterproof people had “nothing to do with the Fairfax affair; that the inter- ests of the negroes and white people were common; that we would protect them in their rights provided they acted as they should; saw negroes pass by hun- reds through tiie town; there may huve been 1,000 or them, and they L armed; the negroes dis- persed when the Sheriff of St. Joseph arrived; they uulso heard that white men from Mississippi were coming: I don’t believe there were more than twenty white men in Waterproof; we were very much tright- ened; the negroes threatened to kill the children -and outrage the women; think they would have ‘burned the town on Tuesday if the Sheriff's posse hadn't arrived. J. 8, Watson and J. G. Schaeffer, of Tenses parish, tostitied that the election at St. Joseph was quict and fair. The troubles in the parish were due to negroes, who, after the Fairfax affir, assembled m great num- ers and threatened to burn the town of Water Proof.
