POLICE STATION HOUSES AND THE POOR, To rue Eprron ov THR HERALD: To what extent may our station houses be: used as lodgings for the unfortunate poor? Have the per- sons in command at these places a right to refuse admittance on these bitter nights, and thus leave the person seeking lodging to freeze in the street? we have much to learn, AN INGUIREL, SHUT THE DOORS, To THe Epiror or tHe Heraup:— I would suggest to the managers of the New York Elevated Railroad that if they cannot heat their cars ‘| and cannot avoid keeping passengers waiting ten minutes and more at the terminus of the road they may at least instruct the brakemen to cjose the doors of the cars between stations. ‘This (Tuesday) morn. ing the door of the car [was in was open over half the way down, and a request to the conductor to have it closed seemed to have no effect. MOTT HAVEN. BAD SCORING, To THe Error or raz HeraLp:— I wish to complain about the manner in which tho Knickerbocker Athletic Club conducted their games on the evening of January 6. [entered in the one mile run, and as I passed the scorers’ stand my laps were either missed or not tallied at all; so much so that I ran nine ie to the mile instead of of aight, and I believe I would have run ten laps if not stopped. The scorers had no more idea oa the laps I made than an outsider had. There was also a walker who walked nine lay of eight, and some trouble occurted about the second place in the five mile run. Competent scorers should be ome ployed. COMPETITOR, erence THE NEW YORK PAPERS IN WASHINGTON. | Wasuinctox, Jan, 6, 1879, To THe Eprror or THE HERALD: When will the Post Office officials at Washington be able to deliver the New York Sunday papers dur+ ing the prescribed hours—yiz., six to seven P. M.? Icalled for my HeRaLD last Sunday evening and was informed that it had not arrived, Icalled the clerk’s attention to the fact that the newsboys were crying “New York papets” at the time, which caused that official to make another diligent (?) search, with the same result. Next morning ena) it was do- livered at my residence at ten A. A LAWYER'S COMPLAINT, To tHE Eprror or THE HERALD:: Permit me to call attention to a glaring outrage upon lawyers and litigants in the Supreme Court of this county, for which some one of the jus. tices is responsible—namely, that since De- cember 20 there has been no session of Part 2 of the Supreme Court. On December 20 it was adjourned for the term—that is, for a period ~ extending to January 6. On January 4 and 5 there appeared in the Register calendar of cases for trial. for January 6, which was an intimation to counsel and litigants that their causes would be heard on that day. This led lawyers to make preparations for trial in the aubpansing of wit- nesses, On January 6 there appeared he court room a large crowd, including lawyers, jurors, litigants and witnesses, of the latter having come from outside counties in tho State, and in some instances from other States, be cnet of the Court announced to this srmp, corer | that the Court stands adjourned wit this (Tuesday) morning, the 7th inst., at half-past teno’clock. This morning the same confiding crowd awaited the appearance ot a judge, when again tho crier of the ere without any explanation whatever, announced that the Court stood adjourned until the 13th inst. This will give some judge s vacation for over three weeks. | Notwithstanding this the judges draw their comfortable salaries of $17,500 Re annum, go to Europe, remain away for months, attend meetings of sugar refiners, make post prandium speeches at Delmonico’s and as a yeneral rule appear to enjoy life admirably, Before [ses gentlemen were induced by the people of this county to take a seat upon the bench they eked out a modest existence, they worked laboriously, were to be found always in their offices or in court, forming the active duties of a lawyer, wero sel sick, but, on the contrary, were generally robust ron healthy.’ But the moment they get on the bench they become victims to Regt air,” *‘over-oxertion”’ aad “the Reh ay: oe Se the ‘phy ‘ical and mental constitution.” If the Bre thren at bar only knew the accumulated ills that await those who venture to ascend the bench it would crush out the ambition of lawyers for judicial honors.
