FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Less Active and Fairly Steady. Govemment Bonds Firm, States Active and Railroads Strong. MONEY ON CALL $A 4A 21-2 PER CENT. —_—-—_ WALL STREET, Wepnespay, Jan, 8—6 P. M. Plaintive brokers who in the early part of the day bewailed the duiness of business and cursed their state of enforced idleness with expressions of despair only paralleled by those unfortunate personages of the Greek drama who loafed about exclaiming, “Io !"" “To !”’ when they felt particularly “down upon their luck,” cheered up amazingly as the session drew toward its closé and the sluggish and hot over strong market of the morning changed into a busy and ex- cited one. As happens with pyrotechnical displays the best of the show was kept forthe end, There were feeble blue lights in the morning, expressive (if we may be permitted the comparison) of languid changes in quotations, and spasmodic explosions of candles @ la Romaine, reflective of the paroxysmal spurts in prices which now and then occurred, but the real speculative fireworks of the day, which lighted up the market with a blaze of glory, were exhibited shortly before the close. Apparently they were touched off by the sudden and very decisive upward start in the Michi- gan Central speculation. Theentire market at theend answered sympathetically the call for improvement issued by the leading specialties and closed strong and in most instances at higher figures. The opening, highest, lowest and closing prices of stocks at the New York Stock Exchange to-day were 4s follows :— Hite sow ino tng. Tt is now very nearly forty yours singe the muccantile Agency was established, and it is still condneted upon the Bal principles and with slight adaptations to altered business necessities, upon the same plan as it was origh ly commenced with. ~ Many efforts have been made not only to imitate it elosely ut notwithstanding all the special foatures held forth to allure patronage they | but also to improve upon its plant have all ended in disaster and ruin. Some of the concerns which have thi attempted improvements and in conse quence fallen into difficulty have, by resolving themselves into stock companies and extinguishing existing liabilities of stock to creditors whom they could not otherwise pay, have contrived to prolong exist by distributing certifieat ence; but the end comes at last, and it is always the same, ‘Tho success which has attended our own eareer is largely due to the fact that our business Is in the hands of mew who have spent their whole lives in it, who may, in fact, be anid to have made it the sole business of their Ives, while the various competing offices have been started and ‘@ goneral thing, have taken. up the business Inte in life, withont previous training’ conducted by mon who, knowledge or experience. In fact it seems as though mem who could succeed at nothing else thought they had some special aptitude for agency work, when in reality they had none whatever, and had not even the rudimentary knowledge of its operations. Is it, then, any wonder that we should look tpon such competition with contempt? Two of our present partners have spent thirty-four years in the business, and all of them have been in it over @ quarter of ® century. Muny of the managers of our branch offices have beon connected with us fot twonty and upward. If all this counts for nothing, them experience and business training are of no value. yeai It is time that these things were properly eonsidered by those whose support and patronage for agency purposes ts sought. A vast deal of money has been literally throwa away by undiscriminatin; Jects, which money, rightly applied, great and beneficial effects to the community. The fact is that there is really money enough subscribed by business men to do tho work efficiently if it were peoperly applied, but it 1s 60 divided up among the different charlatans ongaged i very object sought after, f no less than forty-one mor. cantile, commercial and collecting agencies, which have all the business as to destroy ti We have a list now before ended in bankruptcy within w fow years, and in loss te those who patronize them. Probably some millions of dol- Ines have been lost in this way in unfalfilled subscription contracts and collections made and unaccounted for. The truth is, that at our own present prices it is diffienlt to make any profit, and any attempt to cut under them must of necessity result eithor in unfulfilled undertakings or in ultimate ruin to those who assume them. Out organiza tion {s 80 complete that wocan make any given amount of money go furthor than others can, and although our total revenue is probably three times as great as all others in the business combined, yet, while exercising the great» est careand economy, it is difficult for us to accomplish the parpose sought and make any profit to ourselves. A little relaxation of vigilance: little carelessness in ecom- omy, would surcly bring the balance on the wrong side at the end of the year, Itis a great mistake to suppose that large profits are made at present prices. We repest, that it is with the atmost difficulty the business is done at all without increasing them. ‘Wo are not & stock com: with merely nominal as: sets in stock certificates, We are a firm—the copartuers | are publicly known, or can be ascertained at any thme by inquiry at any of our offices. There is no secrot whatever about it, We make no boast of our resources, but it cam easily be ascottained that, aside from the large capital , ‘employed in the business, all the partners have investments of well known value outside quite sufficient te giveas surance of security and safety to those whe intrast ws with thoir interests; and, above and beyond all this, we have, as above observed, record of honestly fulfitied obit. gations extending over nearly forty years. In view of the disasters and discredit with whieh the yeat now closing has witnessed in collapsed agencies (no less than five baving failed in New York alone), (t is simple jus tice to ourselves that we should put there fnets in omphatio terms before the commercial public, and thus shake from our skirts the disgrace and contamely which such pro- tenders at the agency bi name, and toask, furthermore, that « fair discrimination iness bave brought upon its very between us and those who are unworthy of being called Weare quite willing to be ur own conduct; but we pro competitors should be made. judged upon our merits an: test against being classed among the host of quacks whe havo neither capital nor facilitios for the basiness they are conducting.
