FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, The Stock Market Less Ac- tive and Irregular. GOLD QUIET aT 100 1-8. Government Bonds Quiet, States Dull and Railroads Strong. Money on Call Easy at 3 a8 1-2 a@ 21-2 Per Cent. Wa STREET, ‘THurspay, Dec. 12—6 P. u} Stock exchange operators having for a day or two past executed an inordinate smount of laundry work it was only natural that speculation should sooner or later be hung up to dry. Such, at least, is the in- ference to be drawn from the quietude which per- waded to-day’s market, and which was as little demon- strative of a prospective rise or fall in prices as a ‘weekly wash upon a clothes line. Prices were rather better in the morning, rather worse about midday, gnd better again at the close. Withal there existed charming irregularity which kept both bulls and bears in a state of alternate good and bad humor, and was especially grateful to the strictly commis- sion brokers who fattened upon the prevailing un- certainty that was at once a puzzle to clients and prolific of orders, The coal stocks, which had been advanced immediately preceding the close yesterday, on s rumor, credited to Philadel- phia, that the combination was as yet scarcely a case for the Coroner (showing, as it did, some symptoms of revival), improved a fraction in early dealings but subsequently lost, not only the little gain they had made, but something of the values expressed by opening prices. There is really no reason to believe ‘that the combination is more assured to-day than it ‘was s week ago. The situation is practically un- changed, and Mr. Packer commands it. There is little likelihood that he will accede to the terms of the other companies or that the other companies will accede to his—‘argal,” we are likely to see coal rushed to market, lower prices made than ever before, jubilant consumers and lachrymose stockholders. The railroad speculation wag to-day especially dull end firm, though in special instances it was drooping. Among the firm stocks were the Northwestern and Lake Shore—among the drooping ones the St. Paul's and Michigan Central. In either cave the firmness and weakness were due to very small provocations, though the friends of the Northwesterns are as confi- dent of their value as ever, while the enemies of the St. Pauls assert that their wheat traffic is over for the season and that the return of earnings must show a decrease for several months to come. In the loan market there was a brisk demand for Northwestern shares to make deliveries with, and a small bonus was paid for their use. The stringency was, however, en- tirely due to the demand for transfer purposes, the books of the company closing (preparatory to the flividend) on Saturday next. The market at large was without feature, except that with all its dulness it re- mained unquestionably strong the day through and 80 closed. ‘The opening, highest, lowest and closing prices of stocks and gold ast the New York Stock Exchange to- day, were as follows :— 1004¢ ie 10046 87% 37 87g D4is om 94g 13% 13% = -b13%5 134 1% Mb 68% 68% 68% Tbs The ‘4% jorthwest. ng 405 a7 4i% ‘Northwest preferred. Early yesterday morning Mr. Haswell and his associates, Messrs. Bogart and Worthen, visited Superintending Engineer Franklin on the ground and were shown by him the original plans and the detail drawings by which the work is bein, executed. Then they started from 130th street an spent the remainder of the day walking down the entire length of the drive to Seventy-second street, carefully inspecting the roadbed, flagging, retaining and t walls and other features of the 1ppreve- ment. ey were accompanied by a stenographer whom they supplied with profuse notes upon the progress and gencral character of the work. ‘The re- sults of their examination they will not divulge until they are ready to report finally. INCORRIGIBLE THIEVIE+ Two young men, acting in o suspicisus manner on Pearl street Wednesday night, attracted the attention of Officer Vail, of the Fourth precinct. They entered an alley alongside of No. 482, a liquor store kept by James Prendegrast, and the officer followed and found them in the store, with a small amount of money in their possession, which they had taken from a drawer. They were locked up over night and taken to the Tombs Police Court yesterday morning. Tellef Tillifsen, a Swede, arrested for in- toxication, was in the prisoners’ room with them waiting for examination. He complained to the offi- cer in charge that one of the men, James Sweeney, had stolen $2 from his yest et. The officer was about to search Sweeney when James Russell, hia companion, took the $2 out of iis shoe and givi to the officer, said Sweeney gave itto him. On va charge of burglary they were held in default of $2,000 bail each. The prisoner, Tillifsen, made a charge of larceny from the person, upon which they were held in $1,000 additional bail each. for Furniture, C A..torty months’ time ah jebilehment ia the ee aa and Bedding, at the larges and 514 8th av., corner 6th —FURNITURE—NO 72 WEST 19TH ST.
