(From the Chicago Journal, Nov. 5.] A correspondent writing from Columbus, Neb.» says:—A peculiar incident occurred here a few mouths since, the particulars of which I have just learned, It was onthe day the memorable cyclone passed over Lone ‘Tree and Clark's, ‘The sky waa streaked in the northwest with vivid flashes of light, and a terrible rambling sound made known that « dreadful storm was imminent. A massive black cloud was extending 4 whirling finger toward the earth and sweeping with great fury whatever camo before it. Jennie—a girl who was working at @ cer- tain hotel here—was busy at the stove preparing for the next meal. Hearing a rattle at the side door Jen- nie went to the door and opened it. As she did sa she was caught from the doorway by the whirlin, wind and carried over the house, tarning round and round in the air ax she went, and after approaching the ground on the other side she again rose and was taken by the whirling wind over the stores and dwell- ings a distance ot three-fourths of a mile, being low- ered so that her feet could touch the ground as many as cight times during the trip. Exhausted, but in an erect position, she was at last lowered to.the earth as lightly as a feather would fall, having received no ma- terial injury, though almost frantic with fright. The storm proceeded on its way, leaving her in sight of the town, and in half an hour she again put in an - pearance at the hotel, where anxious friends were wailing her sudden \d mysterious A FIRST CLASS BEAR FIGHT. [From the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, Nov. 8.) A fatal and terrific combat occurred at the zoolog cal gardens in the fair grounds yesterday between two of the bears confined in the bear pits, Tho owuse of the quarrel is not known. It began with growls and whines and reprowchful cries and im precations, followed by blows and heavy sparring. At length both bears became thoroughly enraged, and, standing on their hind legs, they prepared for the deadly duel. Several rounds were fought, and at the fifth the big bear seized the little one around th waist, and, throwing him over his head, fell heavily upon him, Tho little one now got the big one’s car in his mouth and tore away nearly the whole of it. ‘This so exasperated the giont that he fastened his teeth upon his adversary’s left paw and whirled hin around with the velocity of a whirligig. When ha released his hold both bears were pretty nearly ex+ Len wag) Atter ® few minutes rest the fight waa fe ed, but it was soon ended. The li one waa blind and bleeding at the mouth, and was evident; on his last legs. As he lay on his back, panting whining, the other bear approached to make @ finish, and received a heavy slap on the mouth, which drew blood. The big one then sprang upon him, and seize ing him by the throut with his teeth, I while ive clampert po mo! in his embrace, held on until life wae ex- he survivor was fearfully punished, late in two legs, Wwith enough luaiF inissing &f0m beck to shui » cushion.
