Mills to hand over to the Western Union Company the exclusive business of working the telegraph wires along the line of the Unten Pacific and Central Pacitic railroads, in returo tor which the controlling parties in the telegraph Company were to guarantee an increase of the latter sompany’s stock to $50,000,000. It was further Stated that a hitch had oceurred im some of the pro- visos of this contract, upon which Mr. Vanderbilt retused to be a party to it, and Mr. Gould, jo a pet, told out, The whole story may be “twadale,’’ and bertainly looks like it, but it was sufficiently believed to foster sales to-day, and was certuinly ove of the Influences which aepressed the stock. Untortunately this depression was not conflued to Western Union— the whole market felt 1 apd suffered. Especially was this the case with Lake Shore, which dropped trom 395; to 6754, and remained there atthe close; with Central, Hudson und Wabasi, which lost respectively K and 34 percent; with tho grungers, whicu wore weaker by 3 10 3 per cent, and by the rest of the sntire list, Which caded fractionally lower than it bad pogun.
