Bosroy, Oct. 30, 1878, Madel Gertrude Whitman was arraigned in the Bunker Hill Distriet Court, this forendon, on the awlul charge of poisoning her own mother, and Ur. Spears en a charge of being accessory to tho fact Mra L. J, Whitman died about two weeks ago at her residence No 1, Essex street, Charles- town, as it was then suppused, from the efteets of some Paris green, which she inbaled, a quantity of that poisonous powder having been used sround the water pipes to drt away water bugs, This theory.was generally accepted, and Medical Exam- iner Dra, deemed an inquest unnecessary. Dr. Fuller, a local physician, however, made an autopsy and discovered, instead of Paris green in the lungs, arsenic in the stomach. Dr. Spear had en offiee on Main street, 1a he had been called in to attend Mra, Whitman when she was first til, Dr. Fuller, before making the autopsy, insisted that Dr. Spear be present. At this Dr. Spear hesi- tated and refnsed to witness the autopsy, as Dr, Ful- ler is a0 allopathist and Dr, Spear a bLomoopathist, His friends, however, persuaded him to be present, ‘The result of the examipation was that large quanti- ties of poison were found in ti tomach, suflicient to kill three persons, To this both physicians agreod, The investigation developed the fact that the woman did not imbalo Paris green; that there was none of that substance about the house or used in apy way. The poison a been taken into the stomach, The stomach was sealed up toawait further developments.
