FINANGIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Beview of the Week—An Active and Exciting Speenlation in Stocks. THE GOLD AND MONEY MARKETS. Wan Srrenr. Sounpay, Oct, 20, 1878. * The week which ended yesterday was as full of in- sident as 1s @ Christmas pudding of plums, but by no means 60 palatable, particularly to those whe we tong of stocks, Indeed, these unfortunates were loreed to eat the loek ever'so bountitully supplied by » tailing market, Instead of the more succulent tid-bits provided by arisingone, With the exception of North- western common and twoor three of the obscure and neglected outsiders the main list declined the week through. There was every reason that it should have done 80, for existing influences were all of a bearish ftendeney. Monday morning opened with a condition of things that forebode disaster. Somobody (a Stock Exchaoge Committee is trying te find out who) boldly bid up gola to 101%, and as boldly sola the stock market down. It is still a question whether ® conspiracy existed among parties notoriously Gnserupuious in thoir financial transactions to create ag panto, or whether it was morely a deeperate attempt to retrieve their fortunes by an insolvent firm, ln either caso the plot miscarried, yot not without serious damage to a crowd of small brokers who bad been made uso of by the promoters of the swindle Mr. Secretary Sherman, unexpectedly appearing upon bhe scene at this juncture, at ouce proceeded to put a spoke in the conspirators’ wheel by directing the 1m- mModiate payment of the ‘called’? five-twenty bonds. Tho premium on gold went down and Met Co, went up. Tho stock market went up ali tally from the action of the Secretary, which was as- Sumod to have defeated the plans of the gold gam- blers, and partially on the covering of Haar & Co.’s short contracts, Tho improvoment was evanescent, howover, and ina day or two everything became as flat og tho heel taps in a pewter pot of small beer, The stock market had received asbook which was not }o be recovored trom instanter—-there were suspicions pf toul play somewhere and apprehensions of dangors, new and undefined. On Thursday rumors prejudicial to the solvency of the firm of Belden & Co, (who were mixed up in the Haar matter), were as thick in the stroot as leaves in Vallombrosa, and, altnough they ‘were positively asserted to be [also by the house in question, they nevertheless added to tho prevailing Gistrust and doprossion, As though these homemade sorrows were not enough, a supplementary battalion ‘was cabled trom abroad. Financial matters were re- ported tobe inan alarming state throughout the Jength and breaath of Britain. Commercial failures growing out of the Glasgow Bank flasco were frequent apd important. A panic was reported im Man- chester, and it was ramored (falsely, it appears,) that the Bank of England in its distress was a bor- rower of some £6,000,000 from tI Bank of France. ‘With curious blindness to its real meaning the stock market on Friday absolutely grew strong and ad- ‘vancea on the announcoment of this report, Never. shel whether this particular statement be true or false the general tonor of the forelgn nows wasa shade bettor, and this (with the fact that the street had in forty-eight hours pretty much forgotten about the Haar-Bolden matter) in a measure changed the com- plexion of the market ana substituted a hopetul ing for one of despondency. On Saturday this m- pression became still more pronounced, with the ef. fect of making betior prices for the market generaliy and of Western Union and Northwestern common in particuiar, So the market closed rather bullish than bearish, but with much uncertitude as to which posl- tion was the correct one, The following table represonts the opening, bighest ana lowest sales, regular way, of the principal stocks during the past week :— Chic, & Northwest..
