10 NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAY, OBITUARY. BEAR ADMIRAL HIRAM PAULDING, Rear Admiral Hiram Paulding, who died yesterday at Huntington, L. L, of embolism of the heart, was the sevior flug officer on the retired list of the navy aud the last surviving officer of MacDonough’s squadron in its brilliant victory over the British fleet oa Lake Champlain, September 11, 1814—a con- test woich closed the struggle for supremacy on our Borthera iroutier, frustrated the design of Great Britain to inva the State of New York, and, ws Cooper in b al History”? well remarks, is justty placed py those most competent to Wwdge among America’s very highest claims to wal glor; Admiral Paulding came of patriotic an- sestry, bis father, Jonn Paulding, having been the Jeader of the little band of three men who frustrated Benedict Arnold’s treason by the capture of Major André in 1780; while ‘tho distinguished sovelist, James K. Paulding, was bis cousin, Bora on bis father’s farm in Peekskill, N. ¥., December 11, 1797, Hiram Paulding, uatil bis fourteenth year, led the ‘usual life of a country lad when, through the influence of Washington Irving, on the nomination of Pierre Von Cortlandt, thea 1m Congress, he received, September 1, 1811, a midshipman’s warrant and when war was declared with England was ordered te joim our naval forces on Lake Outario. His fortunes, however, were not to be cast with Com- modore Chauncey’s squadron, though while with it hesaw some stirring vice. He was svoo trans- ferrea to the President, temporary flagship of the flotilla commanded by MacDonough, and participated 1m all the actions by land and water in which this offcer’s command was engaged, culminating with the Snail bieody and aecisive struggle at Piattsburg Bay. In this memorable confiict the American squadron Consisted of 14 vessels mounting 86 guns, apd com- all told, including some soldiers doing duty as The British torce numbered 17 ‘vessels, carrying 96 guns and over 1,000 men. The Brittsh fleet, as is well known, was virtually an- Bibilated, its commander killed and all the large vessels captured, some row galleys, which had previously struck their colors, only escaping because there was not a mast in the American fltiila that would bear the pressure of canvas, so riddled were they by the cannou ot, The sanguinary mature of the struggic may be appreciated when it is stated that the Britisn flagship Confiance, out of acrew 0; 300 persons, lost 124 killed and wounded; Mac- Donough’s flagship, the Saratoga, lost 57 1m Kilied ‘and woungea out of a crew of 212 persons, and the other vessels suffered im proportion. The squadron being short of officers Midshipman Paulding, though Bot seventeen years of age, periormed lieutenant’s duty, and commanded the second division of guns on board the Ticonderoga. Fenimore Cooper arks in bia history that “there was a common feeling of ad- miration at the manner in which this vessel was fought and the nobie conduct of all on board. Once or twice the nearest vessels thought her to be in flames in consequence of the awiul rapidity of her fre.” When peace with Groat Britain was declared Midsbipman Paulding joined the squadron of Commo- fore Decatur, and participated in the capture of the Algerine cruisers, Masboudab, of forty-iour guns, and Estedio, of eighteen guns, and the subsequent humutation of the Dey of Algiers and Bey of — In 1816 Paulding was promoted to the rank of ed on board the Inde- tling Out the Spanish the batteries of Callas eertain branches of science required by prolession, he precured a leave of pee and bpeut egdteen months at the military school of ptato Alden Partridge, Norwich, Vt, concluding 8 leuve with some weeks spent in McCleilan’s rig- sing loft 10 Boston i the assumed churacier of a foremast hand.
