ty GRAND OPERA. Arrival of Colonel Mapleson and His Troupe. DELIGHT OF THE ARTISTS. Incidents of the Voyage and the Impre- sario's Programme. re ‘The steamsh!p City of Ghester, of the Inman line, which arrived carly yesterday morning, brought here Colonel Mapleson, the London i:npresario, aud bis magaificent array of operatic and vocal celebrities— Mme, Etelka Gerster, Mile. Minnie Hauk, Frapoli, Campanini, Arditi, Del Puente, Foli, Cumpobello and the romainder of bis superb troupe, including a chorus of sixty-two, which 1s aid to be the finest cborus in the world, Colonel Maploson and his troupe were delighted to reach America’s hospitable shore after a rather tompostuous voyage, and the lovely, bright day which gr d their arrival seemed to them all a ploaging omen of success. In the afternoon the writer called upon Colonel Mapleson at the Everett Bouse to learn his precise pian as to the approaching Opera season, A more royal representative of oper- lic art than Colonel Mapleson could hardly be im- agined. A great, tall, powerful man, of splendid Presence, with sinew and muscle strongly developed; a large heaa, sparsely covered with hair, with a wide forehead and bold, striking features, There is a won- deriui air of freshness and youth about this veteran manager, whose hair still resists the first tinges of Bray. Colonel Mapleson was first questioned as to his de- parture from Europe, AN OVATION AT QUEENSTOWN, “We finished avery successtul season in Ireland, and when wo sailed trom Queenstown we received a Perfect ovation, A contingent of my troupe were to Dave sailed irom Liverpool and metus at Queens- town, but I wae afraid that if they bada bad night ‘and a Grst taste of sca sickness they would leave us ‘at Queenstown, and so I nad to keepa sharp lookout upon them, At Queenstown my very last act was to Sign the deviations from the original plans for the National Upera House prepared by the Metropolitan Board of Works. I kept the steamer waiting for about fifteen minutes, and went out ina little steam tender, and you ought to have seen their general anxiety lest 1 should not go along with them. Miss Hauk, Fol, the long-legged American basso, and Dtbers were gotug to run after me to collar me.’? Colone! Mupieson laughed heartily as he recalled these amusing reminiscences of their departure. ‘As to our trip,”” he continued, during the course of conversation, *‘we started very pleasantly the first fuy, but soon bad a run of excossively rough weatuer. THE ROZE-MAPLESON CONCERT, The interest centred in the present concert season, which, from recent indications, bids fair to outshine its predecessors for years past, was again mupi- fested by the brilliant throng that crowded Steinway Hall last evening, on the occasion of the second appearance of the artists connected with the Ruze-Mapleson combination, Notbing could be wider ef the mark than the assertion that first Glass concerts are not acceptabie in this city, or ratber that, sveaking trom a pecuniary point of view, they é* nat pay.
