Although the amount of business transacted to-day will vary little in matter of balk from that of yester- day there has occurred a vory appreciable improve- ment in prices, Nearly all tho railways havo added something to their market values. Sothe notion of the future course of values poems to be prodicated upon what is likely to be the ‘result of increased railroad earnings rather than upon the manipulations of speculators. The reasoning appears to be as follows:—While tho present price of cereals abroad (particularly in England) is too low to guarantee profits on exports, and while freights by steam are too high to warrant shipments, the existing check In trade is nearly certain to be re- moved in the near future, both by the clearing of for- eign markets, through a decline in suppiies, and in the competitive bids for freignts which, it is argued, will be forced upon the steamship companies.
