10 BOXING - MATCH. Glove Fight Between Billy McClellan and Harry Hicken for a $500 Purse. te TWENTY ROUNDS IN ONE HOUR. A Rattling Contest Which Re- sulted in a Drawn Battle. A boxing match fc purse’ of $500 came off last aight away up town, near the Central Park, between William McClellan, of this city, and Harry Hicken, ot Philagelphia, The men fought according to tho modern rules of glove fighting; that is three minute unless a knockdown occurs, with one minute | the rounds’ the contest to be drawn at the end of an hour, should netther contestant be put hors de combat sooncr. The fighters last night fought twenty rounds gamely during the hour, made a drawn battle of it and divided tho purso between them, THR MEN, McClellan is an American of Scotch parentage. He bas fought with gloves three times previously; first with Prolessor Dole, of Yale College, which Insted ono hour and three minutes, This match took place at New Haven, Conn,, ana McUlellan was the victor, The second was with Jobn Cash, in this city, which lasted only siateen minutes, and the third was with James Murray, of Philadeiphia, which lasted thirty- four minutes, 19 both of which Mac came of successful, The first Ogbt, tho one with Dole, Mac says, was the severest of tuem all The one last night was a very lively one, Deing quite scientific. MeClellan is thirty-two years old and weighed last nigot 145 pounds. Harry Hicken is a native of England, is twenty-eight years old, and weighs 140 pounds, He has fought in the riug five times, the first in England with Joe Hayward, whom he whipped in nine rounds and sev- entecn minutes, and before leaving for America ho whipped Jo Owley, but it took him two hours and thirty-eight minutes todo it, After he came to this country he fougnt a buffer known as Dutchey that he yot away with in good time, This was in 1867, Then Harry was matcbed against Billy Carroll, of Baitimore, Dut aftcr several good rounds the fight was broken ‘up in a@ row. furry’s last appearance in the ring was with Barney Campbell, near Pittsburg, when, after fighting one hour and six minutes, Camp- Dell's friends rose into the ring and stopped the fight, Hurry Hicken since that timo has been on the hell, out of training, and was induced to try bis hand with McClellan at short notice, He was not in condi- tion, but managed by dexterous manceuyring to wear out the hour and make a draw of it. From the fourteenth to the end of the fignt the tac- tics of the men were the same, Hicken hoping to hold out for the hour, and Mac, on the con- trary, seeking to end the — struggle inside of the sixty minutes by knocking Harry out of time.
