Tho usual Sunday gathering of Spiritualists took Place yesterday at Republican Hall, Thirty-third stree The proceedings began with prayer, which was 1ol- lowed by a lecture trom a lady of spare form and pal complexion, on the subject of spiritualistic expecta- tions in the other world, It had been announced that a Mr. Jumes W. IW’ SHEE!” WHITE LEPELS IN SAN FRANOISCO—A PEST BROUGHT FROM CHINA—VISIT TO AN AF- FLICTED WRE10H. (From the San Francisco Mail, Nov. 4.) The alarming fact that leprosy does exist to some extentamong white persons in San Francisco was ouly discovered about one week ago, The majority of our best and oldest resident physicians havo never heard of a case of white leprosy in this city with the exception of thut of Asha Bates, formerly Register in Bankruptcy, who died about three years ago, He con- tracted the di: @ in the Sandwich Islands, and thero- fore the presence of the Chinese has not alarmed the doctors in regard to this curse. They have yet to learn that there are several white lepers in our midst who have caught the affliction from the Chi- nese, Hearing that sucn was the case a Mav reporter yesterday called on a physician, who, he was in- formed, had been treating threo cases of white Hei wituin a woek, ‘Ihe doctor admitted that three cuses of leprosy tnder bis cure at the pi time, He said that @ white woman, the first patient, cume to bim a week ago, She uad been suffering tor the last two years, und spois hud broken out alt ov. her body. On Thursday last a mau called at bis office and stated that he bad been afflicted with leprosy for eighteen months, and would like to have sume medi. tine Lo ameliorate his sufferings. VISITING A LEPER, The doctor informed him that the disease was in- suravle, but gave him some drug to relieve the itch. The doctor descrived the man intelligent rning bis hut, correeponding to the degeription furnished, w: espied standing alone in u large open tleld After sev eral loud knocks the door of the hut was ovened by a short, thick sel, dark-complexioved map, with long, bluck, shaggy hair and course, flowing whiskers. THE = GOLD AND =©MONEY MARKETS. a The Course of Investment ecurities. Steere h ieee Wate Street, Sompar, Nov. 11, 187%. Likentng the daily transactions upon the Stock Ex- change to a carillon of belis, it would be difficult to find an operator cunning enough to ring any changes out of the pervaaing dulness of last week, The tone of the market has resembled that of a passing bell rather than the cheery notes of a ‘‘tripple bob major,”” and tho cadence has marked the time of a speculation “Yangied and out of tune.” It goos without saying, that this was not very cheerful music to keep step to, particularly when the march of prices was down bill, as it undoubtedly wus, Consequently matters on *Change turned out to be pretty dismal, not only be- cause they were innately spiritiess, but because they were left entirely to the manipulation of small tragers who can find nothing ‘tjolly”” in stock jobbing when the leaders stand aloot, ‘Yhe dechne in figures was pretty generally distributed through the whole list, but was most pronounced in Erie, Ii!linois Central, Chicago and Alton, Michigan Central, Lake Shore and the coal stocks. Primarily, the existing dulness (which always handicaps a market with welter weights), and, secondarily, the passage by the House of Reprosenta- tives of the Silver bill, wore the chief causes of de- pression, Further pressure was exerted in this direc- tion by a sharp decline of nearly four points in Erte, as the result of the granting of a decree of foreclosure by the Supreme Court and by certain unfavorable Tumors attaching fo the status of such stocks as Michigan Central, Ilinois Contral and Chicago and Alton, It did not appear thatthere was any founda- tion for these reports beyond a desire upon the part of the bears to force down figures, but they had their influence, nevertheless, as the record shows, Business in the coal stocks continued tame and to yielding prices, The moderate weather has checked the demand tor the product, and the hostile front of the Reading Company, which seems determined to market its coal at less price than the other companies, cote que coile, has shaken faith in the presont value of shares, As usual, Lake Shore absorbed the bulk of speculation, doclining from 6934 to 67, but pulling up about ono per cent at the close of the week. In spite of this there are strong believers in the future of this stock, and wagers, freely offered, thai the next dividend will not be less than 3 por cent meot with few takers. Western Union lost about two points in the week’s work, In the partition of expouses, as between jt and the Atian- tie and Pacific Company, the latter is considered to have obtained the larger slice of benefit—sufficiently 80, 1t 1s sald, to warrant the probability before long of asmall dividend upon the stock. The gold market advanced to 108 on the passage of Mr. Bland’s bill, but subsequently reacted to old Agures on the oelief that even should it pass the Senate 1t would be consigned to the limbo of dead destructives by a Presidontial veto. Government bonds foliowed the course of gold, und tor the sume reasons, though the decline of these securities of 3 to to % percent in the London markets was a strong iu- timation that our British cou: entertainea very little fumily respect forthe parental dollar. Money on call rangod from 5 to 7 per cont, The momentary strin ency of the previous week passed away with the release of tho large sums paid out for interest and dividends, and the apprenended tight squeeze has probably departed for good and all, During the last Gay or twooi the week values in the share market were a shade better, but the situation otherwise re- mained unchanged, TRANSACTIONS OF THE WEEK.
